    Drying off fall calvers

Taking water away was a recommended practice in the 90s when we had a dairy along with the feed change. Lots of fresh water is key to milk production and a shortage of it has a big effect if only for a short period.

    Lick Tubs

Tubs are a expensive way to feed a cow at any time. Grain is cheap and there are plenty of reasonably priced byproducts. It may lack some of the convenience of barrels but it will help the bottom line for anyone thinking outside the box.

    Not sure what's going on

I had a calf last fall sort of like that. At first she tagged along with her mom. I could tell she had been stepped on but I didn't realize how serious it was. She laid around more and more. Finally the vet told me she had nerves damaged and the muscle was deteriorating.

    Milk Fever

Its rare. I would wonder how high a level of calcium was being fed Pryor to calving as a high level can cause a high producing cow to have trouble getting calcium from her bones once she calves. Genetics can play a part. Being part jersy or Guernsey would add risk. Feeding straight alfalfa hay...

Leaving the cows to watch the farm.

I guess I would talk to neighbor friends to keep a eye open. With the price of cattle I wouldn't want someone wandering off with some of them. A story I heard once about a guy sending his cattle to summer pasture with unbranded calves. About two weeks before they were to go home somebody else...

    medicine injecting rifle

I have the Dakota Dart gun. The largest dart is 10cc which requires multiple shots four some drugs. I have never made a bad shot with it. It is low stress for the animal and me. I wish the darts would fall off the animal faster. I would by one again. Mel
