    Feeding Fermented Colostrum

Does anyone do this? I'd never heard of it or seen it but was reading about it online and was curious.

    Rear Feet not right

laminitis is a metabolic thing, usually happens around calving time, if the cow isn't getting the proper nutrition or eating enough. There are different severitys, so you don't always notice it right off. This link has some more info on it if you want: http://animsci.agrenv.mcgill.ca/courses...

    Rear Feet not right

What do you mean by folding up? the hooves or the legs themselves? If it is the hooves I would say laminitis but if she eats well and gets all the nutrients she needs than probably that's not the case.

    A little help please (calf)

those knots from a shot can hang around for a while. One of my cows has one and the last shot she got was Nov. Its nothing to worry about.

    A little help please (calf)

As milkmaid said, if he was given a shot it could be from that. If not, it sounds like an abscess of some sort..if he is acting fine I wouldn't worry about it too much, just monitor it.

    Rabies Shots?

    Free Z Tags!

I wish I'd seen this sooner...I like the z tags alot. Don't think I've ever had one lost or ripped since we started using them. Its probably too late but I'm going to send in an email anyways...can't hurt to try :D

    Rabies Shots?

Thanks for your answers. Probably won't do it unless we hear about an outbreak nearby.

    Rabies Shots?

Do you vaccinate for rabies? My grandfather never has in the 40+ years he's had cows on pasture. But I am wondering if it something that should be done if that's what's best for the cow's sake. We would get one done once in a while for shows but they stopped making that a requirement back in...

    Midget calf

hargis-here are a couple pics I took of my "midget" when I had him. Is he anything like yours? The first pic is him with other calves of normal size and similar age (I think he was about a week older), and the second photo is him just by himself. At the time the pic was taken he was about...

    Midget calf

I had one like that almost two years ago. Never figured out what was wrong with him...he grew very little. Otherwise he seemed healthy. He ate fine, was at a decent weight for his size, but he never grew. When he was a year old he was about as big as a 3 or 4 month old. We did lose him when...

    Grain vs Better Hay

I would stick with the hay as long as it is adequate nutritionally. Our cows eat nothing but grass in the summer, hay in the winter, and they are just as healthy as can be-and they look it. Make sure you use a feeder or headgates because if not they waste so much of it it will drive you nuts...

    Grass Fed Beef:The "Clean" Alternative

I have a grass fed operation, but honestly ed, you don't need to come on here and lecture fellow cattle producers. We are all on the same level here, show some respect.

    Contaminated milk...

Depends what type of bacteria it is. Certain types can pass environmentally, on your hands during milking, from cow to cow, etc. Just follow good practices, keep the cows clean, bedding dry, use sanitizing solutions, wear gloves during milking, don't allow contamination between the mastitis...

Why do some vaccs bumps not go away?

I've only seen bumps when sub-q technique was used. When I did mine a few months ago, I gave injectable Ivomec sub-q and most of them had bumps right after, however, a couple weeks later all the bumps were gone. You can reduce the bumps somewhat by rubbing the area well after an injection...

    Fly Rub?

Has anyone ever used a rub to deal with flies on pasture animals? I was thinking about getting one, the flies have been just awful and fly spray isn't helping much because it doesn't last long and they don't like getting sprayed and move so they don't get sprayed well enough. I have a good...

trying not to freak out - feeling better about it

Don't worry about being a worrier-its better safe than sorry. call the vet.

    Grass Fed--Vaccinations--Worming?

Mine are on pasture all summer and hay from our pastures in the winter. I worm them with Ivomec injectable and BoviShield Gold FPL5. Better safe than sorry.

    can cows eat mushrooms

If it was bad for her, she probably wouldn't have eaten it, or if it tasted bad, she'd spit it out. :welcome:

    Saw my first autopsy today

I always wondered what the difference between an autopsy and a necropsy was-thanks for clearing that up. She died in her pen but we moved her. The backhoe came out and dug the hole in a back field to bury her and we did it right beside that-less mess and easy disposal. Vet's request...
