    Deworming ?

You are correct. Use one drug until it is no longer effective, then switch. We are slowly learning what the goat people learned the hard way about resistance. 1) There is probably no reason to deworm adults on a herd basis, only individuals as needed and they should be on a cull list. 2)...

    Deworming ?

My inclination would be to cull the heifer if she is the only one in the group to have that problem. When rotating dewormers you should consider the class of the drug, not the drug. Ivomec, Dectomax, Long Range, Eprinex are all the same class, so if there is resistance to one of that group...

    3rd Eyelid...? (Nictating Membrane).

Have your vet remove the third eyelid. Simple procedure and will buy the cow a few more years. Do it soon, though because those pre cancerous lesions blow up in mid to late summer and treatment then becomes more problematic.

    Black buzzards got one

They are a protected migratory bird, but you can get a license to kill them. In Missouri we can go through Farm Bureau to get permits. If you kill one hang it by its feet from a tree as close to where they roost as you can and they will move somewhere else.

    Downed heifer, late in pregnancy.

Much of what appears to be adequate condition is rumen fill. Some of those heifers are BCS 2-3 with very full bellies. Need better quality forage and some energy.

Neighbor's mature cattle dying - pneumonia type

Respiratory Syncitial Virus (BRSV) causes exact clinical signs and lung lesions as ABPE and can kill an adult cow in a matter of minutes once they show signs. Probably be best to have a vet do necropsy, to determine difference.

    Leave stitches in?

Cut the suture out. If she does happen to get bred someone will have a big mess next year. Depending on what the vet used as suture, it’s possible that it can stay for several years.

    Pour on fly dope

You really have only one choice in insecticide class for livestock. Organophosphates are not available as a pour-on anymore (there are organophosphate fly tags). There was another class of insecticide called Spinosad (can’t remember brand name) that was available, but I haven’t seen it in 4-5...

    side horn

Seen many of those on brands on old cows. Something to do with tissue growth over time caused by the brand.

    Frostbite?

Could possibly be a latent IBR infection in the trigeminal nerve. That’s getting down in the weeds, but I have seen it. It happens around the time of a serious stress. Benign neglect is only treatment

Sorry, you are right. I tend to think of chelated minerals as all proteinate (amino acid) chelates, but that is not always true

Sounds like a good program. Where do you buy your ingredients? Can you get them in smaller amounts?(5# or so). I think my area is marginal in copper and selenium, so I’ve been adding dry molasses to mineral to increase intake. It has worked as intended, but not the most economical way to do it.

Iron oxide is red and it’s cheap. On cheaper brands of minerals almost all of the trace minerals are in the form of oxides which are cheap and very poorly absorbed. Chelated minerals have the best absorption rates and the highest price, followed by sulfate forms. I use Vita-Ferm on my cows...

R Really don’t know. I’ve heard the theory that the material it is encapsulated in to make it rain resistant also decreases absorption as well as it being a red mineral which in general has lower absorption. Just my dumb Aggie thoughts

I agree. I do use Vitamin E / Selenium injections for newborn calves. I also am not a fan of wind & rain mineral. Done too many mineral analysis of liver biopsies where Se, Zn and Cu were deficient. Many of the red mineral mixes are made from cheaper ingredients that poorly absorbed- you...
