    Locker ready?

I’ve heard you should be able to set your coffee cup on their back and not have it fall off.

    Cattle Vaccine Regimen

So changing needles takes a little more time... does that mean it’s not worth it? Needles are too expensive? How is a few cents more cost prohibitive given the cost of the vaccines in the first place? Do you buy the absolute cheapest vaccine or the one that gives the best protection for what...

    MLV Vaccines

True Grit beat me to it but i was going to say, the newest version of Triangle 10 includes the HB. Which is also what we use. I give it to everything even steers. Obviously they don’t need all that it provides but when they are going down the chute its easier for us with our size herd to give...

Any opinions on products like Safe Gaurd deworming blocks

That's kind of my experience, we have used them before and while I'm not sure how well they worked they at least got eaten. I'm sure mostly by a certain group of cows that are pigs, and not so much by some of the others. Last year it took them 2-3 times as long as it should have for them to...

Any opinions on products like Safe Gaurd deworming blocks

I usually pour cows and inject calves with ivermectin after calving. Pour whole herd late summer (need to soon) and put the SafeGuard blocks out in fall for the cows. They didn't eat them fast enough last year and I'm not sure the blocks are worth the expense. Might look into something else...

How to tell age and nutrition of round bales

Forage test is the only way to know, not hard to do. If the nutrition is good the age makes no difference. I've fed hay that sat in the barn several years and they ate it like candy over stuff cut the same year.

    Fly predators

https://www.spalding-labs.com/ Anybody heard of or tried this? My girlfriend was talking to the owner of the big fancy horse barn she takes one of the girls she nannies for to for riding lessons. She said she noticed they had very few flies. The lady told her that's what they use, costs them...

    Cattle worming question

I just used a pour on for the whole herd, as much for flies, lice and mites as worms. Calves also got an injectable since I feel it's more effective for internal parasites. Especially since we had a threat of rain that could have affected the pour on. Cows should be more resistant already...

Sore leg on a bred heifer.

I just posted in another thread about a similar situation I had with a heifer that jumped a gate and hurt her foot. She was limping pretty bad for a few days but I was worried about trying to get her penned up to treat her for fear of causing further stress or injury. I went with a very...

    New Coral Height???

I had a 4' tube gate to sort with in one pen hung at least 6" off the ground. Was dehorning some heifers a few weeks ago and had one decide she wanted to go back with the others. Took a step back and tried to go over like a dam deer. The launch was pretty magnificent, the landing not so much...

    New Coral Height???

You'll never complain that it's built too tall, but if it's too short you'll cuss it all the time. Just like building a shop or storage building, no one ever complains it's too big. Always cheaper to do it right the first time!

    New Coral Height???

At 5' it better be pretty stout because they will try it if you get some crazies. I rebuilt ours last year at 5'6" and so far so good. The old one was 5' at best and they tested it more than once over the years.

    Vaccination Sterile Protocols

I use a new needle and syringe every time. More for convenience than anything. Load up the amount you need before hand when there's no stress and you can take your time, one less thing to do while you are working them through the chute. Saves time and seems much safer to cut down on the...

    WATER IN THE WINTER

I'd say that's about right for mature cows. I had to look it up to refresh my memory but 1-2 gallons per 100lbs of body weight per day for mature cattle, depending on temperatures. Lactating cows will consume nearly double the amount of dry cows.

    WATER IN THE WINTER

I've never heard of overconsumption of water being a problem for cattle unless they haven't had any available for a long period, then they need to be limited on intake at first so they don't gorge themselves. Add me to the list of those providing unlimited clean fresh water at ALL times. Even...

    winter "accommodations"

I've been asking myself the same questions. I got a tough old group of girls for sure, and I know we don't get near as cold as a lot of you. But I always feel like I should provide better 'accommodations' as well when the weather is bad. I did put out a bale of straw for bedding the last cold...

Anyone w/ experience w/ frozen hooves on valuable calves?

Just saw this thread for the first time tonight. Very cool to read through and get updated all the way up to the present. Awesome outcome so far to what started out as a bad situation.

    Weaning with bully heifer

That was my thought was maybe the calves were trying to suck the heifers and they were getting sick of it. Might not be a good idea to keep them together for that reason anyway.

    How does this tub compare?

Just wondering how these tubs I've been using compare to the bigger brands. Pick them up local and been using them for a few years and cows seem to do ok on them. Keep them out year round, they get grass in summer and grass hay in winter and that's it. Other than some steer feed when I need...

    Hay consumption?

I put the first bale out today since spring. They didn't even pay any attention to it. Pastures are still green but seem to have stopped growing and they are getting them picked down pretty good. I figure when they get tired of picking and start getting hungry the hay will be ready when they are.
