    Death from (REALLY) cold?

Mitchwi glad to hear your steer and herd are doing fine. Thanks to everyone who answered my question. Mine seem to be thriving on this weather. Steer has steam coming off him and a bit of frost on his back in the a.m. guess he is staying warm. Supposed to finally get to double digits...

    Death from (REALLY) cold?

I don't want to hijack the thread but on the subject of cold and extra hay and feed, how much IS extra? I know depends on the conditions and cattle, but have been wondering how everyone determines what to put out. We won't even see zero today and windchills are in the -20's to -30's. Mine...

how does a cow drink water ???

Yep, mine do it too. Seem to do it more when I put in fresh water. One steer likes to try and drink out of the hose while I am filling the tank. Have no idea why they do this. Maybe someone else knows more.

sick calf now two of the calves died

Also it is recommended that shots be given in the neck area. Too much chance that one can hit a nerve in the rear leg area. As Alice said I doubt that is what cause the leg stiffness. Sorry for your loss, have lost a couple myself.

At the risk of repeating myself...

I guess I would try selenium and some B vitamins to try and stimulate his appetite. If you can't be home for multiple feedings I would tube him atleast in the morning and try the bottle in the evening if you have more time to try. That way you are sure he is getting at least something to...

Bottle calf having a seizure??? Help!

My advice first of all is to call the vet. However, from what your are describing it could possibly be an ear infection or at least fluid in his ear. Animals will tend to want to lay on the affected side, have trouble standing because their equilibrium is out of whack. Also the turning of the...

    sick calf

I had a calf die a few weeks ago from dehydration. Was my own stupidity as I knew better. Anyway when I took the calf to my vet, after hours of course, I had the opportunity to hang around and learn a few things. According to my vet when a calf is scouring 2 gallons of fluid can be given...

    Snakebite - NASTY

I also agree with Caustic. In my opinion your "more TLC" and wait and see attitude is going to cost you a cow and a calf. My opinion FWIW is that you need to get the vet out there to clean out the wound and hit her with some stronger antibiotics than penicillin. Especially if you think she...

Should I patch an eye or not?

Thanks for the reply. I didn't think that patching it would be good, but wanted to confirm before I did something stupid. Thanks again.

Should I patch an eye or not?

I have a calf that has what looks like ringworn on her upper eye lid and below her eye. If I put a good amount of anti-fungal cream on the area could I put a patch over her eye, or is that not good for ringworm? I am asking because catching her up everday is an issue and also she is with...

Did I do the right thing?

I could be wrong and I am sure I will be corrected if I am, but I would be carefull how you use banamine. Without re-researching I think that is the drug that can cause kidney damage, especially in dehydrated animals. Doesn't sound like yours is dehydrated, but just a word of caution. Good...
