    tetanus vaccination

Good Morning. Hope everyone is out enjoying Labor Day celebrations! I have a question about tetanus vaccination. We used the one shot Alpha CD product this year for tetanus prevention. We are getting ready to band our calves and have always given a second dose just prior to banding. I'm feeling...

    Vaccine Question

What is all y'alls policy on keeping an open multi-dose vaccine bottle? I always seem to have a few doses left and hate to throw them away. Can you keep these till the expiration date, or does that change once you've opened the vial? If so, how long could you reasonably keep them around...

    cattle digestion and....twine string!

Good morning all, Several years ago, an older vet described 3 post mortems he'd done where balled up twine string had killed the cows, so we've always been extra careful to remove all twine before placing bales in our hay racks. This morning I was out feeding and noticed one of our heifers...

    Sad bull day update

Gosh RR, I'm sorry about your loss. There are times when this business just stinks - literally and figuratively! Seems like the weird stuff always happens to the favorites. How old was he?

    thrush?

Hello all - it's been a while since I've posted, but I come here to read and learn several times each week. Thank you to all of you who share you expertice so generously! I have a 3 month old calf I've been treating for coccidiosis (Albon, Nuflor, lytes and finally Corrid as he wasn't...

    anyone hear of cryptosporiidae

CP, The oocysts (infectious stage) appear in the manure at the onset of symptoms and are immediately infectious. They continue to be excreted for several weeks after symptoms disappear. Outside the body, these little buggers can remain infective for 2 to 6 months in a moist environment and are...

    lame cow

I know Annie, we probably are a little over the top. She was an expensive purchase though and we've had some nice calves out of her but yeah, we are a bunch of softies here. Sometimes I think we ought to rename this place "Money Pit Angus" It would be a lot easier if we didn't have three...

    lame cow

Ok guys, here it is per the vet: Subluxation of the femoral head. She's now on total bedrest (ha-our smallest stall in the barn) and getting daily Banamine. We'll likely head to U of Ohio this week for Xrays and an ultrasound. Hopefully these will help decide if she is salvageble. Sure hope...

    Black Leg????

Hello Rodeo, Sorry about your troubles. I know that one of the first signs of copper deficiency in cattle is an impaired immune system. Your calf may have an infection as a result of this deficiency. Cattle with this problem often loose the pigment their hair -especially around the eye area...

    lame cow

OK guys, two rounds of Nuflor and a lot of Banamine later, she's still gimpy as all get out. Put her in the chute again last night, No swelling, heat or tenderness at the hip, hock or hoof. Not off her feed. Maybe she's faking me out - enjoying her own corral and being pan fed! Anyway, the...

    baytril or nuflor

JT, Nuflor and Baytril provide about the antimicrobial coverage. We generally try to use Nuflor however. Some types of bacteria isolated from humans have begun to show restistance to the quinolone analogues (Baytril is one). This has not shown itself to be the case in animal isolates yet...

    lame cow

Hi JT Nuflor is a broader spectrum antibiotic than LA200 and has been shown to have better tissue penetration. I hate the expense, but in the few cases of foot rot we've had to treat here, we started with LA200 then wound up using Nuflor. Guess we've got nastier cooties on our place!

Sorry! The above post was mine. Sometimes my computer signs me on automatically, sometimes not. Guess this is "one of those days" :D

    Moldy Hay

Hi JC, Inhalation of particulate matter from moldy hay can cause something called allergic alveolitis (Farmers Lung). Often this presents with flu-like symptoms. (shortness of breath, fever/chills, tight feeling in chest, productive cough etc.) This is usually treated with steriods and...

    Runny Eyes

Could be a blocked tear duct. In humans, this and sagging lower lids are the most commom cause of excessive tearing. You might try using some lubricating eye drops (Lacrilube) and gently massaging the lower lid where it meets the nose a couple times a day. This may help clear any mechanical...

    torticollosis

Hi Joe, Tortiticollosis in human babies is a congenital muscular abnormality and the exact cause is somewhat of a mystery, though many infants born with this have experienced difficult deliveries. For whatever reason, one of the sternocleidomastiod muscles developes a contracture (shortening)...

Is it any different when people get ringworm

You need an anti-fungal cream like Lotrimin (generic name is clotrimazole). Apply to the affected area 2-3 times per day and keep the area clean and dry. You can usually find this in the "foot products" section of your local pharmacy or Wal-Mart. Get the generic or house brand if you can -...

    cattle mange

The spring of our first year with cattle, we noticed one of our heifers starting to get baldish patches. Went right to the Merck manual, diagnosed mange and began treatment. Other cows began to show similar symptoms so we treated everyone - to no avail. They continued to appear itchy and...

    darn coccidiosis

Whoops! Just reread this thread and it's coccidiosis you're talking about not coccidioidomycosis. My bad. Coccidiosis is an altogether different cootie. Coccidiosis is a parasitic infection and the infectious agent is a coccidian protozoa. Method of transmission is fecal/oral and can include...
