    Eye Problem

Just a guess on my part but looks like something got stuck in the lower portion of the eye which then led to the swelling and maybe infection, rather than an acute injury. thankful I've not seen that before. How'd you treat the previous cows did they heal up alright?

Fly Control Alternative to Wind and Rain or Justifly

They make it, I get it from a place called southern states, not sure how big they are mostly local here I think. It's $16/ 50lb bag No the hi-mag definitely doesn't touch the flies, I'm using that blend for the spring flush but happens to coincide with fly season though. I like it all blended...

Fly Control Alternative to Wind and Rain or Justifly

I switched to a hi-mag with garlic and cinnamon this year that's made local at my feed mill, I was sceptical. I used Altosid before. But so far I'd say the flies have been reduced by 90% especially face flies and by this time last year I had already treated two cases of pink eye. Not sure on the...

    Lice, what to use ?

I don't know what your climate is like but the lice will die in the summer heat treated or not. I've never worried much about it, every March a few start the scratching, they're already over it here now

Bottle calf! Some say I'm crazy...

@MurraysMutts How do you typically manage transitioning bottle calves to pasture? I've got one 3 months old now, 230 lbs she's taking about 15 lbs of starter daily, and some hay. I dropped back to 2- half bottles daily a few weeks ago. She's gaining well. I'm shooting to get her on grass and...

    Tetanus question?

I was just discussing this with a vet the other day. What bander did you use? I've never had more than at most a day or two of lameness banding 5 and 6 weights, usually only hours. I only use a calicrate. The tension of the band is quite critical and I've not seen one as precise as calicrate.

What and why supplements do you use?

You can of course get hi-mag mineral depending on how lacking it is in that regard. I would recommend loose trace mineral, loose as opposed to blocks. Seems the cows grow tired of licking before getting enough. I definitely see a consumption increase with loose. Cobalt, selenium, sulfur all...

    Death loss to Johnson Grass

Crazy that it molded so much so fast if it was just put up this summer. I've got hay from couple years ago, molded enough that the cows just won't eat it. Guess that's another thing to look out for

    Death loss to Johnson Grass

I wonder if it was "dry" hay or wrapped baleage. I know I can never get Johnson grass dried good just like sudangrass. Maybe a good bit of mold?

    Banding Problem?

I believe it to be safer because a newborn calf would be restrained between your legs or under your knee while the mother is pacing behind you shaking her head, literally. I do "work" newborns, I'll help dry them if it's cold/wet, eartag them if they are heifers so I can register them in case...

    Banding Problem?

I have seen first hand that bull calves left in tact until 500-700 lbs out perform bulls cut or banded at birth. Better performance while nursing momma, Increased weight at weaning, increased weight at yearling. Bottom line bulls develop better than steers. When a calve is born, all I need it...

    Weak calf

To be honest, these were my thoughts exactly. Since the vet bill of $150 I've been trying to see her through, but if she won't improve regardless anything more is a waste.

    Weak calf

I have a 9 month old heifer calf with reoccurring issues. She's around 300lbs. She has bloated three times, all due to the way she lays and sleeps. She doesn't sleep on her chest with her legs curled, as they should. But rather on her side, sprawled out. This has caused rumen gas build-up, I've...
