    weak calf

Go ahead and tube it with electrolytes...at this point what can it hurt...it can only help. If you see a change for the better, keep with the milk replacer and 2 hrs. late give it more electrolytes. BTW...don't ever stop the milk replacer. Alice

    Cow down. Can't get up

The vet didn't give her anything? I'm thinking along the lines of shot of Dexamethazone, but then what do I know... Alice

    Dairy calf respiratory disease

I bought holstein baby bull calves from the sale barn...so the chances of them having had colostrum was was pretty small. I used to be thrilled if the calves made it to 14 days! First would come the scours and if they lived thru that, then the respiratory crud, then the bitter end, however if...

    Cows off the Market

I think your idea of taking them by the vet straight from the sale barn to get vaccinated is a pretty good idea. We vaccinate ours when we get them home from the sale barn, but we have the facilities, and as I remember, ya'll don't have them just yet. And frankly, some of those cows that we...

    sick cow.....need advise .... sap

Maybe call the vet and explain the circumstances to him/her like you did here. He might be able to to tell you what to watch for...or might be concerned enough to ask to see the cow. I always thought that a cow that continued to eat was a good sign that things weren't too dire... Just saw...

    Cow losing weight

Is she limping? Sorry, couldn't help myself. If she does have something extremely minor going on, or even nothing going on, you will have peace of mind knowing instead of wondering. And if she does have a problem needing vet assistance, that can now be provided. Please, let us know...

    Cow losing weight

A twisted gut...hmmm...read this and see if anything sounds close...I'd almost think that if was a twisted gut the cow would be in worse shape than she is by now...or dead. http://www.cattlegrower.com/forum/3/top ... dex/3/3#66 Thanks for the update...let us know how it all turns out, will...

    Cow losing weight

I would say all of the above are plausible...and a quick check by the vet can determine what it is. Waiting any longer could make the treatment last longer and cost more...or the cow could go down hill real quick. And, if it's nothing, then you will have peace of mind. Alice

    Bred Heifer eating pine needles

You've ruled out all the stuff that could be dangerous to her... Just figure she's pregnant. At least you aren't having to go out at 2 in the morning to get hot fudge sundaes with sardines or something... Alice :)

    Cow losing weight

Can you have your Brother-in-law load the cow and take her to the vet? You'd have everything to gain, and very little to lose money wise, at least if the large animal vets charge the same where you live as they do here...if you bring the animal to them. If that cow has something wrong with...

    REDISH/BROWN DIARRHEA

Another thought...if you can get a sample of it, take to the vet for analysis. That way you'll know if you need to treat it, and with what, w/o having the vet out or hauling the calf in. Alice

    REDISH/BROWN DIARRHEA

When I was raising bottle babies, that color of diarrhea would make me think Coccidiosis...but that was bottle babies... Just a thought, Alice

    Cold weather bottle calves

I wish to goodness I'd had luck with concrete...'cause I might be crazy enough to try raising holstein bull calves again. Being able to disinfect would make a huge difference. It's just that the few we did try on concrete died quick. Somehow those little creatures could make their way to the...

This is gonna make me real unpopular...but what else is new... Are these calves being raised on concrete? Alice

    Doe's this sound like lice?

Which, to me, has always meant the best thing... I would bet the ivomec and the cold weather will take care of that nasty lookin' "psoriasis." Now, all ya' gotta do is figure out how to keep it from happenin' again. Hint: bleach water, bleach water and more bleach water...on...
