    Santa Gertrudis x Braford.

Those calves in the picture were off this guy. He was a very good Brangus bull hated to let him go.

    Santa Gertrudis x Braford.

Yesterday I took some pics of the 2 replacements I saved to replace the oldest 2 cow’s who may be on their last year this year. Even though they have mainly Hereford markings they are half Gert and half Hereford. Sometimes they come out this way.

    Santa Gertrudis x Braford.

No not all the herd is always a work in progress. She has had a good run but I think 16 years old will be her last year. But I keep saying it is her last year but she keeps bringing in a big calf every year.

    Santa Gertrudis x Braford.

I have been on record on this site for years that for my area in North Alabama the Gert/Hereford cross is the best cross for a mother cow you can come across. Before the developers started buying us out had pasture just for making replacements that we put Angus or Brangus bulls on.

    New Hereford Calves

Alabama has a solution and I know even typing it seems crazy. But Alabama allows anyone with 3 or more calves to retain ownership through slaughter and get paid just like the big boys. So if you are in Alabama and feel like you are getting ripped off for your red or Hereford etc calves just...

    Santa Gertrudis Bulls?

Lots of rain this year. That is partly what makes the flies worse for us. We use rabon and spray every so often but when we spray we seem to get rain that washes off the spray. I am not sure what they do at night but I don’t think it can hurt them eating in daytime too. Grass is very good...

    Santa Gertrudis Bulls?

Send him to Alabama. The heat index this week will average 110 the flies are terrible this year along with mosquitoes at night. And this has been a cool year for us. Those Gert crosses will go out and get it and eat in the heat and not stay in the woods all day. I know people even farther...

    Santa Gertrudis Bulls?

In Alabama there is the Crimson Classic sale https://user-hunsujj.cld.bz/Crimson-Classic-Sale-2023/2/ and the Alabama Connection sale https://www.bamabeef.org/events/2021/alabama-connection-sale each year. There is a purebred breeder on this site from Tennessee that I have met and did business...

    Santa Gertrudis Bulls?

Guess that just leaves more Gerts for me. We use Hereford x Gert cross as momma cows and either Angus or Brangus bulls has done well for us for few years now.

    Santa Gertrudis Bulls?

I think there are a couple big Santa Gertrudis outfits in New Mexico. Still kinda far from SoCal but allot closer than the Southeastern US. And maybe more your climate.

    3/4 Brahman x Hereford cross

Looks like a good buy anyway around it to me. I know everyone wants all their calves to be uniform but if you are running 20-30 cows it is not that big of a deal. In my opinion you can’t raise em for 1200 a piece so take em off his hands he or she already did the heavy lifting. Breed em and...

Electric fence first time. Questions ?

Agree with other poster who said have plenty of cutoff switches along the fence and only energize what you need. I use Cyclops solar chargers I bought 1 solar kit from the company that uses 3rd party to make them and after seeing it made my own from there out for 1/4 the price.

    Top Dollar Angus

Are the sire and dam from warm weather climate? I ask because I have found that I don’t have much luck with ai sires from cold weather climates and/or not from the fescue belt.

I use a Brangus bull on Gert x Hereford cows and it works for me.

It would be close to Beefmaster (Brahman, Shorthorn, Hereford) just with more Hereford in the mix.

Best Hereford outfit in the south. Would love to see that specimen.

    Beefmaster or Santa Gertrudis

You can get a good Gert bull for less than half the price of an average Beefmaster. And you can get a great Gert bull for less than half the price of a good Beefmaster. I like Beefmaster as well but pound for pound they are probably most expensive cattle there is around these parts.
