    Litton Charolais

I had the opportunity of a leave while in boot camp in 1970 to go to Chilicothe Missouri to meet the Littons. When I arrived on Saturday afternoon Charlie Litton was there and showed us some of there cattle, told us some about there breeding program, and was a very gracious host. The next...

Cow size as it relates to finished steer

One thing not discussed yet. Let's say a cow in my herd ways 1400. However a year in my neighbors herd and she is only 1250. Management is a bigger factor than genetics period. Consider how replacements are raised and two years are grown out and you can have a 250 lb difference in mature weight...

    SIMMENTAL Cattle

I do select for calving ease and I like Dream On in a pedigree. I also calve in late summer which I believe helps. It requires much more management in the winter though. Anne nearly all breeders graded up their herds through AI from mostly British breeds also developing a breed for the North...

    SIMMENTAL Cattle

Parisian was the first Simmental bull I used when he first came into Canada and I have been loyal to the breed every since. I use all red bulls. American and Canadian breeders have done a great job of modernizing all breeds and spieces during my career. The black color though is a poor choice in...

    galloway cattle

Years ago when I first started out I had a few Galloway cows they were good moms and decent on disposition. They raised good doing calves. The one disadvantage I heard then was that cattle feeders didn't like the longer hair which in wet weather would have mud balls. Would I own more? Wouldn't...

    AI bull recommendations?

I haven't followed the price of dairy cows for a long time. It used to be they were more than beef cows. Might it be more practical to sell dairy and by back the kind of beef cow you really want? It takes a lot of years to grade up a herd. Mel

    A couple new heifers...

They should grow into good mommas. As for the belts if you have ever come upon black cattle on the highway at night you quickly come of the opinion they should all have white belts!!!

    Frame size vs Longevity

I think femininity is far more important to herd longevity than frame. Cows lacking femininity seem to fail to breed or milk causing them to leave the herd early.

    Retaining Heifers

I generally agree with what has already been said. One other thing I watch that I don't keep a heifer from a late calver. To often a heifer from a late caper can be a late calver herself producing a calf that won't dollar out with the herd average. Mel

    Red vs Black

I was listening to Temple Grandin at a meeting this summer. She stated that cattle getting to hot in feed lots is one of the most serious problems. Black haired cattle have the greatest issue with over heating.

    The Future Of Beef

I compliment the angus breeders on very successful angus certified beef. It seems though everyone forgot the good red angus that originated from the same genetic pool and has a long history of sound genetic selection.

    Frame size article

A interesting article! It goes along with research at Texas A&m now. They went into slaughter houses and found yield 1 prime grade carcuses and cloned them. The last I read they have 5 bull calves and three heifers. It will be interesting where there research goes now. Mel

    Old school Simmental/Fleckvieh bulls

True but there are some. Beef Maker is one I highly recommend and there are others. I would recommend you go on the Internet and check out Wilkersons Broken Heart Ranch. It should be of interest to you. I am also doing a somewhat similar plan to you. Mel

    Old school Simmental/Fleckvieh bulls

I would be a little cautious using full blood genetics. I believe simmental breeders have Dona an amazing job of breeding a high performing animal of moderate size and calving ease. The Red simmentals can be found with a search for "bull barn", a Nebraska based company I have used. Mel

    Weaning replacements need fence advice

I pen the calves next to the cows separated by continuos fence with ample feed in both lots. I want them to have to leave the fence a short distance. Mel

Is small cow size a myth?

The difference between 1100 and 1400 lb cows! So much is management. How were they grown out? How are they maintained? I maintain my cows with more flesh than most. I believe once they are in this kind of shape it dosnt cost that much more to maintain them and comes back in a tar calf weight...

What type of monsters do you have on your scales? I am setting up a new indoor facility and am planning on putting weighbars under the chute. Mel
