How many breeds do we need?

Anyone got a link to the Baxter Black poem "The Cow Committee". I think it would fit this forum very well. I can't remember the whole poem but I remember on line: "What we need here, are cows with hump The ability to live on tumbleweeds, And run from clump to clump"

How many breeds do we need?

If that's what the buyer's want, that's what the producers will be rewarded for producing. If it's good for the producers, it's good for the industry because without producers, there is no industry.

How many breeds do we need?

Thanks for the back up Cutter. Some of these guys that still think we are colonies of Great Britain and therefore must remain loyal to the breeds that originated there aren't looking at the big picture. Sure GAR and others can take the very top end of their breed and get them to yeild like an...

How many breeds do we need?

No offense Hoss (Burno) but I think you're lost in the 60s. To get the yeild grade, you've got to have some continental breeding. I agree that the Simmy/Angus is a great cow and if you're in the south, use a simmy/brangus cow. Then put what ever bull you want with her. Other options for the...

    Better Websites

I think lots of folks are comparing true, traditional working ranches that made their living on cattle and land with the more modern ranches that made their money somewhere else and invested the profits in land and cattle for a writeoff. Probably the nicest ranch I've been to is Express...

    Who likes Brahmans?

They make really good grandparents. However, anymore than about a 1/4 blood seems to cost a man at the market.

    One more picture

Gosh - you guys are kind of hard on ol' showmom. If I hadn't looked at the picture and only read the post, I would assume it was a picture of a cow with a BCS of 3 or a low 4. Besides - she's an angus - all of the fat is in the muscle, not around it. Yum Yum :D

    Whitch Breeds to Raise

Todd - judging from your user name, I'd say the best breed would be corriente. There's usually a pretty good market for good dogging and roping stock. You could lease them out or sell them. Just make sure they have a good horn base.

    desperately needing help

Does your daughter have any practical reason for wanting a red brahman for her project or is it one of those things where she saw one and thought the ears were cute? Not to discourage her, but I think if her heart is set on a humped back heifer, she'd have lots more to pick from if she would go...

    What breed to use

Jeanne - I'm with you. Plus, I don't think a calf out of a Brangus cow with a Simmental daddy is going to get docked because it isn't going to look like a Simmental. With the Brangus cows, the exotic (simmy, limmy, maine, gelbvieh, charlais) will shorten the ear and your cow should keep the...

    What breed to use

Considering that you have english and brahman breeding in your cows and you're selling at weaning, I think you should look at a continental breed for your bull. If your cows are mature, calving shouldn't be a problem unless you go crazy and don't keep an eye on birth weights when choosing your...
