When to process… always a guessing game.

Thank you, that’s the plan is to process them in December. Should be good and ready by then since they will be on a good finishing ration.

When to process… always a guessing game.

Thanks BFE. I just bought her about 2 weeks ago. I might be able to find a customer who is ok with the smaller carcass. How much finishing time do you think she’ll need? She’s pretty fat, but she still young.

When to process… always a guessing game.

I really would like to sell heifer #3 and heifer #4. My main issue like you mentioned, is that I already have these beef sold for customers, so I feel as if I am scrambling to try to replace them to keep good beef supplies to my consumer. I always predict a hanging weight average from 750-850...

When to process… always a guessing game.

They were born Spring 2022. The heifer #3 is actually the youngest of them. But she’s pretty small, my guess is only about 600-700lbs. She’s only been on grass. Bill was dexter and really well muscled. Cow was b&w face. Maybe I can make an appointment to have her done sooner? I don’t think she...

When to process… always a guessing game.

Nice hanging weights. Mine usually come out anywhere from 750-850 hanging. But I have always done steers so I’m curious to see what the heifers hang out as. Yes I have been using the meat shop in Martell. I have also used TBonez in Auburn. I am looking to buy 2 steers if you have any for sale or...

When to process… always a guessing game.

Steer #42 Steer #47 Heifer #1 Heifer #2 Heifer #3 These 5 above are the next batch to be processed. My thought is to let them grow a little larger and process them first week of January. That leaves us only 7 months more, and I would begin graining for the last 4 months. What do you...

    Nuts on or off?

I would say leave him be. We had a “steer” that we purchased that ended up showing signs of a bull. His name changed real quick to “one nut”. We processed him and he tuned out great. Couldn’t tell a difference in the meat compared to steers. Also with him, I contemplated trying to cut him and...

When to process… always a guessing game.

I have 2 steers and 2 heifers that look to be around 800lbs. Trying to project ahead on when to process. I do finish them out on grain for a minimum of 4 months, last year I did 5. The butcher shop I normally use is closed Nov and Dec so latest I could use them would be mid October to have them...

    Heifer

Yes thank you! Gonna let her grow some more since she’s just a yearling. Will for sure post pics when she’s processed 😁

    Heifer

Yes absolutely! I tend to process mine a bit younger too.

    Heifer

I think that’s what I’ll do. Going to let her grow some more though, I think she’s got plenty more of that to do.

    Heifer

I saw photos of the dexter bull and he was really nice looking. Mama is average larger frames cow size. Owner said bull was probably 1200-1300lbs.

    Heifer

Thanks Ken! Just curious as to what size she will mature.
  14. ksmit454

    Heifer

I guess my thought was to sell her and buy a steer so that I have a higher carcass yield. But I think you’re right, either decision is not better or worse.

    Heifer

Yearling heifer, just turned a year old this month. Wanted to keep to butcher later. Thoughts? Shes b&w face/dexter cross. Not usually one to buy anything crossed with dexter as I prefer higher carcass yield. But I know heifers are smaller maturity anyway. Market prices are good also so might...

Hope they are ready by butcher date…

Thank you everyone for the kind words! My goal was 750-850 and I’m glad I met it. I wish I took photos of them right before processing. They had lots of good fat to them! Can’t wait to see how the bull ends up tasting. It will by the first bull I’ve done.

Hope they are ready by butcher date…

Here’s the results (hanging weights): 816, 762, 773, 827, and 764. Side note - do young bulls finish out ok? One of these guys was a bull, people I got him from missed a nut. Hope the meat will be ok.

Hope they are ready by butcher date…

Ouch… yes you are right there Lee! Priorities I guess. Hide rug is a must because I’ve never had a hide like this before.

Hope they are ready by butcher date…

Oh yes they are getting free choice hay, and almost 20lbs of grain per head per day. I’d like to increase the grain but with grain prices, I really am having a hard time doing that.

Hope they are ready by butcher date…

Oh yes, thank you. He’s actually the smallest frame wise of this group. However, like you said, he is maturing well.
