What do you like/dislike about these cows?

Bega Cheese suppliers have a 250,000 thresh hold anything over that they get docked at start 5cents/litre if nothing is done than its up to 15 cents/litre they than use a sliding scale where the SCC is averaged out over 13 weeks before the farmer is back off penalty rates.

What do you like/dislike about these cows?

cull order for us would be mastitis (continuous high cell counts), temperament, potential calving problems (if the neighbours limmo bull has gotten in again) fertility, we've had cows that we've the eye taken out due to cancer or injury & they've been fine.

    tube feeding

The only time we've used tubes have been when the calves have been too weak to feed themselves. I did work on a farm where every calf was tube fed if it need it or not I know of a calf that had to be tubed up until it was weaned, pretty sure it didn't last too long after weaning. These calves...

    Angus milk cow? Why not?

We have a dairy farm as well as running a few head of beef cattle (about 20 in total) all our beef cows have been through the dairy for at least 1 lactation some my parents have laid claim to & are still milking them the reason being if they do have a dead calf they can still be milked & earn...

    Jersey Genetics? HELP!!!

No never tried Elton or Valerain but Valerian is my choice but is too closely related to a far few of our dairy cows. One young bull I did try was Sandblast (he is related to Tailboard) these should be calving shortly I was very lucky as the breeder contacted me to see if I would be interested...

    Jersey Genetics? HELP!!!

Don't get me started on FlowerPower my Astounds are way superior than FlowerPower temperament wise they were perfect FP's had a tendency to stomp & kick while cupping up, for me that is a big no no some would come in kicking out at you as they walked up the platform couple were so hard to get...

    Jersey Genetics? HELP!!!

Latola has been used here in Australia with pretty good results maybe look to either Australian or NZ for grassfed milk production. I think ASTOUND was a doing very well in the USA we have a few of his daughters & they were great well attached udders good teat placement, feet & legs. Another...

    A Few of My Favourites

No we put the cups on between the back legs. We keep the tails short we'll trim just below the end of the bone anything that is real dirty we trim off as much hair as we are able to. The only time the tails aren't trimmed is when they get ready to go to the dry paddock that & blue stripes down...

    A Few of My Favourites

No its the photos if I was to be really really picky about the udders it would be they may be a tad too long, but as I don't want the udder itself hanging below the knees these are fine. For Sharon being almost 12yrs she still in top condition feet, legs, udder are all perfect the 1 that does...

    A Few of My Favourites

While most have seen my Highlands I rarely post any pics of our dairy herd so here are a few of my favourite cows Sharon she is a 1998 model still going strong at her peak she would produce 30+ litres day now she has dropped back to 20L she has given me 5 heifers & 2 bulls, several...

    Ingenity tests

Swedish Reds are one of the breeds that went into creating our Aussie Red breed & I'm pretty sure they are now using Swedish Reds in the Illawarra breed as well. They are a nice looking breed, would have some if they would only fit in our dairy.

    What Kind and how much?

I'd say go for a dual purpose breed like what has been mentioned before. Angus x Jersey milk really well ours look more angus than Jersey. I'd watch their udders & if you were going to breed your own look at udder attachment, teat length centre ligaments ect.

    Ingenity tests

When I first started AI'ing the first bull I choose was based on temperament he had a temperament score of 94. Nine years on I still have the son of that bull (our senoir herd sire) & a daughter. Now I look for butterfat,Protein, udder height & width, milk, low scc. I have learnt what...

    3/4 jersey heifer

Keep her we milk about 10 Jersey x Angus the only bad thing I will say about them is they are very free milkers & is that really so bad :) . Another thing to watch for is teat length if you are going to hand milk the last thing you want is teats that can only be milked with 2 fingers.

    ? about dairy calves

Replacement heifers are reared by hand feeding, using either a bucket, bottle or automatic calf rearer depending on the individual dairy operation. Again depending on the individual dairy operation calves can be fed a ration of powdered milk, fresh, milk or a combination of both, from about 1-2...

    Polled Dairy cattle

I think that in modern times it will be very hard to find a naturally polled dairy cow without going back to the dual purpose cattle & even than there will be horns that will be found. My only other sugestion is to join the Polled Dairy cattle @ yahoo groups

    Polled Dairy cattle

Well apart from Jerseys which had the horned gene bred into them the only other one I can think of is the Norwegian Red they are a dairy breed but I don't know too much about them I have been told they would make a good cross over my polled red & white holstein & Aussie red cows

    Milk bar #1

I agree with what Hills wrote, breed her to a male that you know doesn't carry the gene. You can improve the offspring but it will take time. BTW for a goat she's not that bad to look at ;-) Jane
