Planning a new feedlot in North Florida. Need Help

I think there is a large packer in Mississippi or Ga that went broke - state now owns it and will probably sell for pennies on the $ due to default on bonds is what I heard.

    How to run Stockers

Best advice I can give you - or anyone wanting to run stockers is to be at Bud William's Livestock Marketing School Nov 4-5 in Kansas City MO. 1-800-535-6051 or http://www.budwilliamsmarketing.com I went last year and was amazed at info he had and profit potential by marketing rather than just...

    liquid feed

Very expensive if you look at what is actually needed by cows. Generally all you need is energy - liquid protein is urea- and generally your hay will be adequate or close for dry cows. 1st forage test your hay - then you will see what you need. If you need extra energy - generally a few...

    drought and grass fed

Not sure If you are talking about me or not- but yes it is dry - No - by upping the management with poly wire and slowing the rotations, we still have grass- yes it is hard to get those step in post in this dry dirt. For some reason, the drought does not seem to have effected growth - must be...

    On Farm Bull Test

Agree with you on the non use of a Bull test - have not wasted that $ for years. If you are grazing and feeding - I would think you should use a higher % soyhulls and less corn. Starch issue here - but if the grass is way down - then more corn will be ok. Also really have heard horror stories...

Cutting Johnsongrass hay in drought conditions.

Do Not cut it - Drought conditions will cause that hay to have problems. several cattle were killed down in Bowling Green a few years ago with exactly what you are referring to. ( Isn't it tough watching 3 major hurricanes come up from the south, flooding areas, and we can't get a drop in...

How much hay per calf? please......

You can figure roughly 2 1/2 % of body weight per day on consumption for your sheep and for calves. This will vary as to amount of grain feeding, what type of hay, what type of stockpiled forages they have, etc. But this will get you in the ball park.

    using sericea lespedeza as hay

Not a bad feed if it is cut early. the tannin in it as it matures will cause the cows to not graze it. You might try haylage, as the fermentation process will soften the hard stem and will reduce some of the off taste. Will need a baler and wrapper - but won't get it done for $12. I Never...

    Grass fed beef --Your Opinion?

Would suggest you go to http://www.eatwild.com for more health benefits on grass fed beef. yes it works. Breed wise - stay with english types - Angus- hereford etc. The Charlolais - Simmental etc have a terrible time finishing on grass. You need the older style - smaller frame type for...

    Creep Question

Unless you are going to show these calves - do not creep feed. The show boys are the only ones that even come close to justifying that extra cost. You will never know what quality of cow you have if you prop her up with $$$ and creep feed. Seems you learned a lesson on the show washing -...

    Penned steer, sweet feed only?

Sure - give the steer some hay - he needs it, cattle are ruminants and hay will keep rumen working. Might also bring in a "buddy"- the cattle are herd animals and do not do well on solo acts - competition will make them eat better. Also consider adding a probiotic like Conklin Fasttrack - if...

    Wheat Hay

As a fellow West KY Farmer - you better watch wheat and the spring rain problem. It needs to be cut right- if it gets rain like this year- you will be way too mature. I used it several years, also prefer Rye grass. Your bean/millet program or a sorgum - sudan grass ( if you can get it to dry...

    holsteins

The best thing you can do is get soybean hulls from one of the soybean processing plants. Cheaper than feeding corn, better nutrition for feeding on grass because of the starch issue with corn on grass. You can work the steers up to a full feed on soyhulls on grass and they will really grow...

    grass vs fedlot

I have grass finished calves for several years now. Never found the yellow fat so many talk about. Marbeling is a product of genetics as much as feeding. Contential cattle will not work on grass - many angus won't. You have to go back to the deep body - easy fleshing cattle for grass...

    calf weaning

2 weeks would be a VERY minimum. Better go longer. Why put them back together? The calf is at the peak of growth potential - he needs the best pasture, feed available for fast gains. The dry cow on other hand is needing nothing but time until next calf. She needs the lowest value pasture...

    corn stubble pasture

Couple of suggestions - Strip graze it with a temp hot wire will get you more use of the residue - remember cows use 1 mouth, but 4 legs plus a manure depositer! Also the value will determine on how good a job they do with corn harvest - how much was left etc. Better use the ground fairly...

    Feeding Range Cattle

Cattle are ruminants - stop propping them up with feed. You will never know which ones to keep if you support your cattle and your feed salesman! Try letting the cows support you. Sweet feed is the most expensive feed you can buy. Corn on grass is a big mistake - starch conversion problems...
