    Corn crop/ cattle prices

All things remaining constant for ever dollar that a bushel of corn goes up it reduces the value of a four weight calf about $75 dollars considering a 5 to 1 feed lot effeciency.

    24D and cattle grazing

The directions can often be misleading depending on whether the manufacturer has spent the extra money to get the product labeled for such.

    soy hull pellets

A fellow here picked up a bunch of straight corn gluten pellets that were being off loaded from a barge that was trying to combust. Even though they had a slight smoky oder the cows loved them. He just dumped the truck in the pasture and let them eat free choice. He was no longer a cattleman...

Can I mix oats in with this?

Lightweight calves need in the neighborhood of 12-14% protein to get the best growth. I would mix about 3-400 lbs of 41% soymeal with 16-1700 lbs of this mixture. JB

    any problems storing cottonseed??

The full fat has all the rice oil left in it. You can usually make a loose ball out of it. Riceland and some of the other big guys have started squeezing the oil out of there bran....isn't near as good feed. The bran I am feeding is 14% fat and 14-17% protein. It enables me to stretch my...

    Hot and Dry

What I just can't get by is these dadburn skeeters. It hasn't rained a spoonful in three months and everything else is dead as a hammer, but the skeeters are thriving. You can see clouds of them in the evenings while I'm filing water troughs. Anybody else got these new drought resistant...

    any problems storing cottonseed??

JT, How much rice bran do you feed? Do you feed the 'full fat' or the squeezed stuff? I am currently feeding rice bran at a rate of about 2lbs per head per day. I was planning on grinding some milo this fall and blending it with the rice bran (if it ever rains and I have any). JB

    Soy beans

Big D, Can you point me in the direction of this university study? I also raise soybeans and I am very interested in this info. Also how do you dry roll your beans? JB

    bermuda grass

I am getting ready to seed/sprig a new pasture. I've been debating between common and some of the improved types. What is e everyone's preference in bermuda? JB

    finishing with alternate grains

I plan on grinding the milo before I feed it. The heavy rains and high water all spring ruined this year's milo crop or I would be feeding it now, however, I have a large quantity of scrap mill rice. I am debating blending feeding it. I just don't know what kind of finish I would get. JB

    finishing with alternate grains

It seems that just about everyone here finishes with corn or sweet feed. Has anyone tried finishing their beef with alternate grains. I have been debating finishing a couple on rice or a rice corn mixture. I am going to put up a couple of bins and save a couple thousand bushels of milo from...

what should i grow in my pasture

rodeoking, If at possible I would try to put two steers in the pasture. They are herd animals and he would be much happier. If you can tell us where you are I'm sure someone can give you an idea of what is best to plant or you can contact your local extension office. JB

    baling winter wheat

I certainly will let everyone know. We need every advantage we can get. I don't think it is something that can be done every year as conditions won't allow for it, but if it works 50% of the time it will be worth it. I'll just try a small plot, weather allowing this year. JB

    Young bull and needed suggestions....

We ate a Hereford heifer that was about 9-10 monthes old one time (wouldn't stay in the fence). She was up to about 700 lbs. It was quite excellent table fare. I have a friend who never steers his bull calves (or heifers either for that matter ;-) ) He butchers them at about 11 months of...

    baling winter wheat

The time frame that I'm looking at baling the wheat would be in a stage before it really gets stemmy. It would be a whole lot closer to baling a wide leaf type grass. The area I'm thinking about trying it has a very sandy soil and excellent drainage. If I can catch a dry week in late march...

    baling winter wheat

Morning Campground, Did you harvest the rye grass seed? I'm really debating trying it on a least a few acres. If it works it will change the way I raise cattle for good. J Baxter

    baling winter wheat

Anybody here ever tried to bale winter wheat early enough that you could still cut the wheat. I have another 100 acres that I'm debating on planting in wheat, but I am not going to run cattle on it. I was just wondering if I baled it in early April (at the same time I pull my cows off of the...

    Hogs/ Cattle diseases

As long as the hogs stay on their side I don't think it will be problem. If they start trying to get out those will be the first eaten as I will lay them down on the spot. There is nothing worse than a hog for tearing up stuff. JB

    Hogs/ Cattle diseases

I really don't plan on running the hogs in with the cattle. I have about four or five acres on the backside of a forty that the cows will not utilize because of a slough, but there will be nothing but a fieldwire fence seperating them. I was thinking about fencing the slough to force the cows...

    Hogs/ Cattle diseases

Anyone here run hogs with or adjoining cattle. I'm debating getting a 100 head or so as I have a ready supply of feed, but I'm afraid of diseases. Are there a lot of diseases that are communicable between hogs and cattle? I've raised a few hogs in the past, but the were not in close proximity...
