    Mostly Heifer calves

Just settled into the chair from the farm. Had to pull a calf from a 10-year-old cow who has head calves, black clockwork. Big calf, a man who came out and helped said there are a lot of calves being pulled this year and a lot of problems because the ryegrass has come in so thick early And the...

Well, you are correct. Of course I don’t want to wait two more years for this discussion.😂😂

    Uterine Prolapse pics

Here is the set up. The clamps go around the hip joints and you lift the rear to let the legs hang in a natural position. They support their selves in front. It gives the cows the chance to get nerve and muscle back. Doesn’t always work and didn’t for us

Did not end up well. Gave her 3 days hanging an hour at a time and legs never came back. Learning experience for me.

Had a cow get paralysis yesterday from calf stuck at hips. We checked her around 11 sat night and up and eating. Sunday morning she was down and calf stuck. Lost the calf and cow still with one leg not working. Hung her twice now and she was showing a little control of the leg this morning...

    Premature calves

Timing also bad, bull was turned in first week of May so they are all showing signs, a little bagging, and the normal dilation. I have a call into my vet and I bagged up the calf.

    Premature calves

Well calving season she’s not off to a good start. First two calves have been born early and neither survived. Both look early third trimester, fully formed, hair just started and weighed about 30 pounds so I may be off on my trimester. Not a good start to the season and I am talking to some...

Calving can be so rewarding - and so gut wrenching!

I did consider the hay. This years bales of triticale. We supplement with liquid feed, whit and mineral salt same as for years. Gonna wait a month or so into calving season to see if we have more problems

Calving can be so rewarding - and so gut wrenching!

We just had the gut wrenching side yesterday. As we have improved our herd quality it’s exciting to see our good heifers join the group. Yesterday perhaps our best young cow we’ve raised aborted her second calf. No issues last year and the yearling steer is the biggest, best looking in the...

    Breeding bull to daughters

Yeah, you’re crossing lines when you had dock bar and Poco in the same bloodline. That little runt dock bar was one hell of a horse also

    Breeding bull to daughters

Wow I haven’t heard that name in years. Poco Bueno was basically the start of Appaloosa cutting horses in the 70’s. Believe he was dead before that but his name was tied into almost every top performer. We had several geldings in that line and while we didn’t cut they were sure top roping horses...

    Charbra direction

Bulls we have used the last 5 years have all been charolais and registered/AI bulls. Still have 9 of the black but remainder of cows are retainment from our heifers so Brahman influence watered down even more.
