    Breeding issue

If they were confirmed bred by vet at purchase, then do they really have a responsibility? Cows/heifers lose calves, so if they offer you something, I feel like they are being generous.

Thoughts on leasing out a bull...

BSE before and after the lease to confirm that he starts and comes back in breeding condition. Insurance on him. Time period set in stone. I have never formally leased a bull. I have borrowed one and loaned one, but these are three things I think would be important.

Timing to allow weaned calves back with ma's

I haven't put heifers back with their dams until they were about to calve, so 2 years old.

How long to leave bull on small group of cows

My bull stays with the cows year round. My calving window isn't as tight as I would like, but my cows are just a part time hobby, so it doesn't really bother me if I have to hold a calf or two back to sale at a later time. I'm seriously considering holding off when I change bulls so that my...

This is what happens when the neighbor's bull sneaks in..

I bought a belted heifer a couple years ago to throw in some more diversity in my herd. I'm wanting a heifer out of her to retain, so of course she has had two bull calves.

    Testing Bulls

Same. This bull passed when he was purchased as a yearling, but that has been a couple years.

    Testing Bulls

Do you test your mature bulls yearly or just when you have a problem? I had a cow come up open. I checked her this week after all her herd mates had calved and she didn't look any closer. The bull has been running with a different group for four months. One cow in that group was bulling last...

    Young cow

I like the looks of both her 1st and 2nd calves. She did a good job with both.

How old before retiring a mama cow

Just to add to it, we also look at teeth as a deciding factor. We have some cows that mouth out as 7 year olds, but are at least 10-11 years old. They are in good condition and still on schedule for calving, so they stay. I have a cow that I honestly can't remember how old she is. She should...

    Some Babies

What breeds made that 215 calf? I like the looks whatever it is.

    new calf

Thanks jilleroo, Iso and everyone. She is doing good. She is giving plenty of milk and the calf is doing good. Thank you all for your advice.

    new calf

I appreciate it guys. I like this heifer, and I do want her to be able to do her best.

    new calf

I agree completely. I keep good hay out for them and have been for a while due to lack of grass. I keep range meal out for them. She was wormed this fall (October). Part of the problem is that she is a rangy, longhorn heifer. I have had her on good grass with creep feed and she has not gotten fat.

    new calf

Had a calf born Friday morning. Black bull calf. He is out a black, Longhorn cross heifer and a red Saler bull. He weighed about 50 pounds. (No exact weight, I just know he wasn't that heavy when I picked him up.) She was a younger heifer, but she seems to be doing a good job. I should only...

    some pics

I guess what I meant is if I buy any cows, they will be better cows. I don't plan on buying any more cows though until I get my feeder calves sold and then I will be buying a better bull, anyway. I am going to make the best of my free bull for now, though.

    some pics

Thanks for your response. I definitely agree. Any cows I buy will definitely be picked to make up for where he lacks. The other heifer I have (no pics) compliments him more than the Lola heifer. *ETA: The bull is 12 months old. How much of his muscling will change with age and change in diet...

    some pics

The Saler bull I am going to use was delivered today. I went out after I got off work and took some pictures of him. I remembered to bring the real camera too. #14, 12 month old Saler bull.

    some pics

I am going to go ahead and put up some pics. They are off my phone, so they aren't the best, but I am going to eventually remember the camera and take some real pics. These are three of my breeding age heifers. The first two are out of a Shorthorn bull and 1/2 Gelbvieh, 1/2 Holstein cows. Their...

    Salers

The heifers and cows that Doc has seem to have a good disposition. They are calm and good mommas. The bulls are gentle, but not pets. I like what I have seen so far. I have one heifer that I am pretty sure didn't settle to the Red Angus bull so she will hopefully breed to the Saler when I put...

    Salers

Thanks. I am hoping to get my heifers up in the next week or so and have them preg checked to know for sure. They ran with the Red Angus bull for a couple months. The bull owner's heifers were all bred, but mine were a little younger, so I wonder if they stuck. They could be as little as 3...
