First Experience with AI a total fail. Need a better way

I only buy 50 straws a year or so from my Genex man and he comes by and fills my semen tank periodically for no charge. I also buy my misc. AI supplies from him.

First Experience with AI a total fail. Need a better way

Man, I hate to be the downer ITT, especially when it comes to educating newbs. But why do you only have five cows, no bull and are trying to AI? If you are willing to purchase a semen tank (Maybe I should ask. Do you have a semen tank to properly store the semen?), semen and spend the money...

    Consistent Maternal Attitudes ?

I have experienced this, as well. Sometimes coyotes or deer running through the pasture will get a herd excited for the day. Once a few years back a mountain lion got in and chased the cows in our home pasture. I assume the ML was a young stray male, because one is rarely spotted in NWMo. He...

    Consistent Maternal Attitudes ?

I try to keep heifers out of successful dam lines and use bulls known for positive dispositions. That means growthy heifers often get culled and less impressive heifers sometimes are retained. However, best laid plans do not always come to fruition. I have seen heifers walk away from their...

    Consistent Maternal Attitudes ?

Think I used the term "temperament". My 50 years of experience indicates temperament impacts mothering ability directly. Although I have seen mean or flighty cows perform/produce well enough to stay in the herd, their disposition is often passed on to their offspring where it impacts feed lot...

How do you develop your replacement heifers ?

Guess I'm not worried about conditioning heifers on grass. I want them to gain well enough to be ready for breeding next spring. Cattle are predisposed to convert grass to meet and I figure they will do fine when I turn them out after breeding.

How do you develop your replacement heifers ?

I probably do things wrong or at least the old way. We calve from mid-February through April. I don't wean until the middle of October, so that the calves get good late gains on the flush of late summer/early fall grass we normally get. We put the heifers on a ration of free choice brome hay...

    Consistent Maternal Attitudes ?

We are a few miles northeast of St. Joe. About half way between I-29 and I-35, where you most likely drove through on your way to or from Wiscy. We are not in the fescue belt. That is farther east and south. Many pastures have been converted into row crop in the region, but that should abate...

Nice bull. How many cows are you exposing to him?

    Selling Semen

Below is Drive Train's listing in Lawson's sale book. http://www.angusproductions.com/cat_lis ... LID=509020 The pedigree is common enough. The EXT sire line is known for poor disposition. I have heard of the Sitz Lucy cows, but neither his dam or grand dam are pathfinders. According to...

    Selling Semen

Another thought. I know there must have been bulls that were used primarily in commercial (non-registered) herds before they were identified as superior breeders and then became popular with the registered crowd. SAV Final Answer 0035 comes to mind in Angus sires, but I can't think of many...

    Selling Semen

Bingo! First, I have to assume the bull was tested free of all known genetic disorders before you bought him. Second, from what I've read you purchased full possession and 100% semen interest. Third, I assume the bull's pedigree is up to the mark and then some on both sides. Question No. 1...

    Consistent Maternal Attitudes ?

We are not exactly in the registered business, although I sell a few bulls and replacements to neighbors. Just private treaty, no production sales and don't participate in shows. My grandpa started the operation in the early 1950s and my dad inherited it. I am 60 and have always raised...

    Consistent Maternal Attitudes ?

Poor disposition is the first reason to cull a heifer from the keeper pen. Don't want those cows on the place. However, many good cows with adequate dispositions might be a little aggressive in protecting their newborn calves for a day or two before reverting to docile. That is normal...

    Consistent Maternal Attitudes ?

Wild cows, nervous cows, mean and aggressive cows all make poor mothers. A nervous or aggressive disposition usually equates with poor performance in the feed lot, as well. They get distracted and don't take care of their business. I have no idea what the university research says on the...

    Consistent Maternal Attitudes ?

Assume you meant assess. There are maternal and disposition EPDs available as a selection tool in the Angus breed. So there's that tool. Disposition heavily impacts a cow's maternal qualities. However, the best source of information is word of mouth connection to other breeders, professional...

    Consistent Maternal Attitudes ?

Totally agree with this. We have been improving our herd through AI for 30 years. Always concentrated on the maternal in sire selection and selected replacements with a bias toward the dam side. Consequently, it is extremely rare in our operation for a heifer not to exhibit normal maternal...

    Your thoughts before we cull....

Cut your losses. She has and continues to tell you she needs wheels under her fast. These are the kind you cull off as poor doers.

    Bismarck Vs Brilliance

Right now I have a good Genex man and found I can trust him. I used to have a good ABS and Accelerated Genetics reps, but don't know them now. Select Sires has never set foot on my farm. I have ordered from Cattle Visions and from Angus Semen Service, as well as directly from the bull owners...
