    Alfalfa Blooms, done growing?

When alfalfa hits bloom stage, does growth stop for all pratical purpose? I understand that as % of bloom goes up, quality starts to drop. Asking as with no rain to speak if, second crop is hitting 10% but only 12" tall. If I wait to cut, and trade off quality, will I still pick up tonnage...

Round bales with old corn stalks

Last year field was in corn. This spring disked the corn stalk fodder in best I could, then "no-tilled" a mix of clover, alfalfa, and grass. With the lack of rain, just now got the first cutting off and baled. The question. When raking, I pulled in the last of the corn stalk residue, and it...

Oats or Barley for nurse crop?

Around here it would be called balage, or just wrapped bales. In my mind balage is what you would have if they fermented. Here I am looking to wrap them to avoid rot/mold/etc. If one is not that much superior to the other, I will decide based on yield and cost. Thanks to you both.

Oats or Barley for nurse crop?

Seeding a new pasture/hay field this spring. Due to needed feed, I will be cutting and baling the nurse crop rather than letting it mature. I am guessing I will need to wrap these bales due to high moisture. I live in NW Wisconsin. Is barley or oats, cut permature, and baled the better...

    Haylage vs Round Bales

Thanks to all that offered quite a few thing for me to consider, most I had not thought of myself. That is why I come here. To FarmGuy, yes it does rain in Minnesota. In the winter we get what we call snow. That would be forzen rain. I see that you are from Minnesota, so I am happy to help...

    Haylage vs Round Bales

If I were to choose to let the hay mature and then bale, what % bloom would I be looking for? I know it will be over 50% bloom, but how much over? Thanks

    Haylage vs Round Bales

Storage is not the issue at all. I can store 100's of bales inside, or chop and store 100's of tons of silage. My question is, if I let the field, which is 95% alfalfa, overmature, get more tonnage. By chopping and putting it in a stave (upright concrete) silo, will that make the stems more...

    Haylage vs Round Bales

If I were to choose haylage, it would be put up in a a vertical stave (cement) silo, as that is what I have on site. All of the equipement to load/unload is still present and working. I should have made that more clear in my first post. Sorry about that. One other fact I need to bring up...

    Haylage vs Round Bales

What to put up for next winter? I live on a older dairy farm. I have silos, unloaders, conveyers, etc. I also have a large pole barn to store round bales in. Either choice I make will require I have a custom guy to come into put it up. Lets assume the cost to harvest either method are...

    spreading manure

Do you have any weight on it, or have bars/boards to hold it flat? Thanks

Feeding small square hay vs. round hay

I am a small timer operation. I rent out my tillable acres and use the money to buy my round bales. I buy wrapped bales. My waste is about 4%. To figure that out I put round feeder on fresh ground and once they were done, I raked up all the loose hay and weighted it. I do buy a few square...

    Lime in small quantity

3 Ton would be 120 50lb bags. How much land you are applying lime on?

    Lime in small quantity

Do you or nieghbor have a manure spreader? Quite a few around here have lime dumped on side of field. They will use bucket to load (not fill) spreader, and hit the field. Far from a nice even spread. You could then run a drag of some kind over the field. Just one idea of many I am sure.

Whats hay worth in your area?

When I first started buying hay, this drove me nuts. I would find some hay for sale at $x per bale. I would call and ask how big each bale was and they would tell me the size. When asked how much they weighed, they would mostly guess. The guy I buy from will deliver them in loads of 5...

Whats hay worth in your area?

I am paying $70/ton for round, wrapped, delivered bales of second crop. RFV around 110 based on what field it came out of.

    Anyone cutting hay now?

We have people still cutting and baling here in NW WI, well after out first frost. We had a long dry period over the summer (not as bad as those down south) and it knocked the 3rd cutting back. Most were just going to let it go til spring, but alot of it has started to lodge, so cutting has...

    Cow Preference: Pasture vs Hay

My cows are like kids, they always what what they dont have. When I put out the first round bale in the fall, they run for it and gourge themselves. Once spring hits and I open the first paddock, they run for it and gourge themselves. After the ground freezes rock hard, I will remove the hay...
