    2019 Fertilizer Applications ?

Hmmmm… K31 Feeds my cows through the winter without starting a piece of machinery. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

    Livestock Water Opinions

10-4. A lot depends on the lay of the land. One of my tanks does about 30 acres, one around 60, and the other waters about 85 acres. I have fields that vary in size from 6-15 acres divided by one strand electric, and divide up by polywire as needed from there.

    Livestock Water Opinions

Is there not a way to let one water station cover 2-3 fields? I put in tire 3 tire tanks a few years ago. They all water 4-6 fields.

    Grass on new land

I believe I can live with the sticks for a couple years for what that probably cost. I have a good many left around where they loaded the trees out, even after dozer with root rake. Wish I would have got a crew with a chipper. I have about a 1/2 acre worth of stumps to go on my clearing...

    Big Cow Gross Margin ?

Or another way to look at it is if you were stocked to keep cows on grass year round equipment cost would be minimal. I see it around here. A lot of them say they don't make any money. They cut hay all summer and feed all winter. I'm trying to make a living with cattle. Every time I sell...

    Grass on new land

My fields I would guess average 50% fescue, some areas more probably 70% and some 30%. Other grasses are Bermuda, Bahia, Johnson grass, Dallis grass, some crab grass, I think I found out some is called KR blue stem (wish I could get rid of it) and a few others I'm not so sure about. Some...

    Grass on new land

Cotton1- I'm in the northern part of McCormick county but still not too far. Everyone asks me how the cow business in doing and I tell them that the price drop hurt but the drought is a continuous kick in the stomach. Looking back I wish I had destocked some in the early summer, kept waiting...

    Grass on new land

I understand that but I'm either imputing labor or $$$ into the farm. I want all that to be as low as possible. Yes, I've been toying with the idea of buying some calves from local farmers/sale barns. I would precondition them and then make load lots with them. If they will pay for...

    Grass on new land

That's why I wouldn't want to plant a field with it from my experience with it. Unless you are in the need of more summer grass. I'm assuming what we have in areas is the Pensacola variety. It does well in the summer but cows will not hardly touch it after a frost. My rest periods are...

    Grass on new land

I haven't. Too many variables. 2014 calf prices vs. 2016? 2014 grass production vs. 2016? I can tell you 2014 was a lot better year  . I want to be a low input producer. I'm sure that some years with a higher stocking rate and bringing in more outside feed it would pencil out to my...

    Grass on new land

I'd be glad to show you what I'm doing. Also would be good to check out what you're doing. You are about 30 minutes from me. Sounds like we have the same goals. I haven't had the luck with cool season annuals I have tried to where I've felt it has paid for itself. I've been implementing a...

    Grass on new land

I'm in the process of clearing about 30 acres myself. And I'm also in the same area as you. McCormick County SC. Why do you think you wouldn't have much luck with fescue? Is it the sand? Fescue is awesome (well not this year but what else has been good?). Sounds like you already have some warm...

    Broomsedge

Do a soil test, most of the time it is a PH issue but not always. I had a couple fields this past fall that had a good bit of broomsedge in them. I was going to put lime on. Decided to do a soil test before I did and the PH was 6.5 to 6.9 in them. Glad I didn't put the lime down, they were...

Need some advice on a high grass pasture

We have not mowed in 3 years. Cows are actually in chest high mature fescue with seeds shedding at the moment. I'll notice a cow here and there with eyes watering. I guess that it is from seeds but it usually clears up in a couple days. We have not had any serious eye problems but, I'm not...

Need some advice on a high grass pasture

So you are worried about turning them in there and trampling in to the ground being wasted grass? Your solution is to go in and bush hog it and cut the grass down? That seems like a waste of grass and fuel to me. The best thing is like mentioned above, strip it. If you were to turn them in the...

    Ky 31 Fescue Pastures

Fescue is great. Like they said, clovers will dilute it. I've heard the endophyte free fescues are having trouble in droughts because of overgrazing. The endophyte in KY 31 helps keeping cattle from overgrazing. If you have the ability to fence in the fescue hay fields, I would. It makes...

What is it worth to mow and rake?

Make note not to buy from that person anymore. I have land I rent for hay and have someone custom bale it. If I don't get enough from that, I'll buy as needed. The land that my cows are on was continuously grazed for decades so it is not in the best shape. I am now managing the grazing and...

What is it worth to mow and rake?

Get out of the hay business. You don't have to own hay equipment to be a beef producer.

hay trailer that you feed from

I don't know where you are located in AL, but I bought a couple from D and E Welding in Lyons, GA. They have a website. I've had them for about 6 years now and they have held up fairly well.

    Question on Stockpiling Fescue

We've been stockpiling on the farm I work on for about 4 years. It varies from year to year. Normally, on a good stand of fescue, you can stockpile 1ac/cow and get anywhere from 80-100 days grazing without grazing it to the ground.
