    2022 Hay Update

Here in central OK, hay is about to burn up. I started cutting yesterday. Due to fertilizer cost and no rain last fall and this spring, less than one 4x5 bale /acre where last year 3 bales per acre. I found some spots with downy brome and weeds, so baled them within 3 hours of cutting to let...

Bartering hay mowing for baling. What’s fair?

It sounds like a good deal. my Vermeer 504R premium last year was $36,500 it is $41K this year. Tractors are not cheap either. I use an old sickle type swather and never rake.. I can cut all day long on 40 gallons of fuel..

    Soil Health and Fertility

I got a litter private applicator permit 2 years ago. I am in central OK. I spread 25 tons on my home place and 75 tons on another. the 25 tons went on 36 acres. The other went on about 100 acres. In both places the litter sat and was rained on for 6 weeks waiting on litter tests and then...

    Soil Health and Fertility

I have bought hay for the last 3 years. different suppliers. I also bale as much hay as I can. My cows will leave others hay to go to mine. I have baled weeds rough stuff, everything trying to get a quarter cleaned up. They eat most all of it. I bale it as soon after cutting as I can...

    Unrolling hay

I saw a picture of a homemade unroller afewmonths ago. Feller built an axle less than 4 ft wide with pipes that his bale forks would fit into and welded to the axle. Had 14 or 15 inch tires on the axle. He would lay the bale down with wrap off and then pick up the axle on the forks and push...

    Feeding Hay

Been feeding for the last 2 months here. I have 40 head too many on my place. Just waiting on cooler weather to sort and cull. I know ai am going to take a hit at the barn, but that is the cattle business.

    Pastures

I rented 110 acres across the road for $10/acre. only 72 are usuable as the cedars and bbois Dárc has taken over the rest.. It will take the 5 yr lease I have to get it shaped up to really use. Had not been cut in 9 years and half had horses running on it for 10 years..

    Unrolling hay

I improved a lot of my pasture by moving the feeders around and then running the batwind mower through it in the spring. I saw a pictue in FarmShow where a fellow welded a short axle with tires & wheels about 3 ft wide on a couple of pipes to fit over his bale forks. then when he sets a bale...

    Cool Morning

I would love 80 degrees. Went out a couple hours ago and had to come in after 30 min. heat and humidity is killing me this year. My PA wants me to see a Cardio dr. I told her when I can get someone to cut and bale hay I might have time..

    Hay season 2021

My grass is played out. I still have about 50 acres to cut in between Cedars, Bois D'arc and Hackberry trees. My good knee decided to flare up and not let me put any weight on it, so sorting cattle is almost out of the question. Still have 40 head to get rid of. Last week I rebuilt the...

    Let it get to big

Here I would bale it green and let it go to silage. Put 3 wraps on each bale, and squeeze them close together. My 504R Premium Vermeer loves the green stuff, but IZ used to bale with a 648 New Holland. Never had a problem with baling green. Years ago baled some wheat hay. It was so geen...

    Spraying hay field

I need something that will kill Bindweed. It was brought in on some hay I bought a few years back. Now it is all over my wheat pasture. Cattle love it, but they don't kill it out. I have some 24D w/ dicamba.

    Urea $ 580 ton !

Bought litter last year. 25 tons per load. roughly $1200 supposed to e 200/200/200 per ton. Applied about a ton per acre. But the problem with litter in OKlahoma is the damn bureaucrats. The east side of OK has phosphorous problems due to litter. Very few chicen houses West of I-35 in my...

    Cheap guidance system

I got an EZ guide from Messicks. It was a little m ore expensive, $1500 took me 2 seasons to get it fiugred out, but it has saved a lot of fertilizer. I plant wheat into pasture and it is a must to know where you have been.

    2021 Hay

I bought a bale wrapper for 4x4 bales 7 years ago. Got the grapple, frame to turn the bales on edge, and a pallett of wrap in the shed. Never used it. It was one of those wet years. By the time the freight company got it here we were in the drought times. Located in Central OK if anyone can...
