    turnip greens

I second that you should try to offer them something other than strictly turnips. Once I helped a guy move his herd from a turnip field to pasture and WOW there was quite a cloud following them down the road...as well as some (actually a lot of) green stuff on the road marking their path... ;-)...

    Paraquat

It is a contact herbicide and kills all plant tissue it touches. However, it will not killl weeds if they are above a certain size. If they are too big, the plants will be defoliated and then grow back in a few weeks. In that case, roundup would be a better choice. I don't remember the rate...

    Canada Thistle Marathon

I second what Dave said. Stinger works extremely well for us since it translocates down into the rhizomes of the plant. These underground roots are what keeps the plant coming back again and again after pulling or spraying with a less intense herbicide. It is expensive but we only mix up...

    Haying Millet

I think Alabama meant the "dough" stage. I found a really good article put out by the SDSU Extension. The link is below... I hope it helps! http://agbiopubs.sdstate.edu/articles/ExEx8142.pdf 8) :) 8)

    Weed identification and solution?

Hey all, That is definitely burdock, as I think you all have established. I am an Agronomy student and have had several classes regarding the control of certain weeds so maybe I can give some advice :) The plant has an extensive root system and is difficult to kill with most common...

    Intermed. Wheatgrass "Haymaker"-for arid climates

I am not sure what you mean by extremely low temperatures but we also get snow on and off during the winter. I guess I am not too interested in introducing any more exotic species into this part of the country. It seems as though they are all that exist in some areas. However, if it works for...

    Intermed. Wheatgrass "Haymaker"-for arid climates

I had never heard of that grass and did some looking around on the web for info. It appears to be more of a tropical/sub-tropical species and definitely wouldn't survive our winters here. I even found several websites that considered it an invasive exotic species. But, with its high forage...

    Intermed. Wheatgrass "Haymaker"-for arid climates

NorCalFarms, I think it would do pretty well up there. You should be able to get a considerable amount of growth in the spring to graze and then I would lay off of it until the following spring. If you had some late summer moisture, it may even grow significantly enough to graze in the fall...

    Buckbrush and Blackberry Control

If the buckbrush is in an area that can be burned in the spring, I would suggest that as a control method.

    No-Till Trefoil W. South Dakota

Out here in the dry high plains, legumes have a hard time competing in grazing situations. Usually, the cattle eat them first and since they don't have the same physiology as grasses, they can't take it. I am actually doing some research on native legumes in the great plains for my master's...

    Intermed. Wheatgrass "Haymaker"-for arid climates

To be honest Bernard, I'm not too sure how it would do down there. What are your average temps throughout the year? Being a cool season grass, I am not sure how "cool" it needs to be to stimulate growth. I will check on that and get back to you!

    Intermed. Wheatgrass "Haymaker"-for arid climates

I really like our little part of the world... This year we are getting a much more moist jump-start to the grazing season compared to the recent years! What does your cattle herd consist of? :?: :?: :?: Now, I know there are more of you from arid climates that read these posts... Let's...

    different grasses

It will also depend on what time of the year you plan to graze the pasture. That way you can correctly balance the warm and cool season grasses. However, depending on your part of MN, you may not even have the option of too many warm season species... What are your avg. temps and annual...

    Intermed. Wheatgrass "Haymaker"-for arid climates

Are you familiar with the area? My family's farm is North of Morrill on the Sioux-Scotts Bluff County Line. Currently I am at graduate school at the University of NE-Lincoln.

    Intermed. Wheatgrass "Haymaker"-for arid climates

I checked the records and we baled approximately 5000 lbs/acre after combining the seed. But that does include some irrigation throughout the growing season to increase yield. Our annual rainfall is about 13"/year at the farm. 8)

    Intermed. Wheatgrass "Haymaker"-for arid climates

I was just curious if anyone here has heard about the new variety of Intermediate Wheatgrass called "Haymaker." It has incredible forage quantity and quality. Our family is growing a seed field in western NE and after harvesting the seed, we baled it for hay and were amazed at the amount of...
