    Buying Hay

I would love not to bale hay and own hay equipment but... There are no custom balers here. There is no reliable source of hay here. If there was enough hay to buy it I would in a minute.

    Summer annuals

I have researched it... I am interested in actual people who have done it rather than what universities and seed companies say...

    Summer annuals

What would you guys recommend for a summer annual for haying... I have done BMR sorghum sudangrass, and BMR sudangrass in the past, but never one of the millets what is your favorite?

    Sweet Colver in pasture

Nope, no danger at all unless you bale it.

    Grazing corn stalks

Maybe, but I would say it depends more on when you are calving. If you are calving in march or earlier, I would definetly be done by January. If you are not calving til may why stop at January?

    Yes, for an average cow.

    yellow blossom sweet clover

In our sandy big pasture, it about covers the back 40 and the cows eat it pretty well when it is in a juvenile stage.

You are all stupid and doing everything wrong!

Bez: you are right, I probably shouldn't have done this, but I thought it might have been a teachable moment on how not to win friends and influence people. I happen to agree with some of what Ed was saying, but I hope that I would never make people feel bad about doing something...

    Good fertilizer study

I do... apply manure to the field that you have captured from the cows. I have not bought commercial fertilizer in 6 years.

    Good fertilizer study

Sounds like a pretty typical study used to discredit organic type fertilizers. Use a crop with a high N requirement and for 1 year; compare it to Something that is designed to stimulate soil bacteria and organisms to release nutrients already there over a period of time. This type of...

    The Forage Chain-- Grass Finishing

He is talking about grazing rye, wheat, barley, oats etc. in the vegetative stage before they go to grain. They are high in sugars which is good for grass feeding as they have a high brix content. Starches which come from grain are not acceptable as they tend to increase the Omega 6 fatty...

    Grass-fed Beef Cattle Genetics 101

Thousand lb cows sometimes wean 600 lb calves, but more often they wean 500 lb calves. Many of the so called grassfed genetics result in too small framed calves that end up docked as feeders. And it takes 2 years or more to properly feed them out on grass. But it all sure sounds good, doesn't...

Has anyone used Monty's Liquid Fertilizer

I do not have any idea whether Monty's works or not, but I do know that there are already thousands of lbs of NPK in soils to be used. The problem with conventional thinking on fertilizer is that it is a racket, conceived by agribusiness and sworn to by their bought and paid for land grant...

BMR Sudangrass for hay and pasture

Thanks Mike: I have 10 acres along the river here that I would like to plant something in, the problem is it floods about every other year.

BMR Sudangrass for hay and pasture

Has anyone planted this? Not the kind crossed with sorghum, they say it makes a lot of hay and doesn't dry too bad. Truth or Fiction?
