    New batch

One thing about calves is that it can sometimes pay to feed them through a drought. As long they gain weight, they are appreciating.

    New batch

Thanks, that's the plan. I just try to make sure price I pay matches value and those 1 1/2s often seem below their value. There are certainly some plainer ones that I hope can upgrade with some feed. Might be a dairy cross here, oops!

    New batch

Here is some of my calves I bought for this season. They were purchased over the last month. Ended up averaging around 507 lbs, $2.40. Probably half were bulls. All are steers now. I'm always excited to see how a group turns out!

    An exercise for all

Fun exercise! I'll take the easy way out and just assume a lump total cost. Assuming $1.50 Canadian COG, you could pay $3.05. I'm curious to see all the things you take into account!

    Making money in cattle!

I did the math on that in 2018 when we bought our place. What I did was projected what our net worth would be after 30 years in two different scenarios. Scenario A - put all of investment budget into mortgage until it's paid off. Then after the mortgage is paid off, put all of that investment...

    Making money in cattle!

You don't want to go cheap with yearlings. You would need to figure in some money for expenses, probably $200-$300 per calf. Not all of that would likely be cash expenses for you (commission, freight, labor, rent). The nice thing about calves is that they appreciate every day. Just make sure you...

    Making money in cattle!

Ha! I wish that was the trouble. It was a bad round of sickness. I have bought a few corriente and longhorn crosses (mistakenly). That is part of the tuition. Best to start out with an order buyer. I guess they stick out a lot more at home than in the ring sometimes.

    Making money in cattle!

I really enjoy stockers. I have a couple friends that have switched from cows to stockers in the last couple years, and they seem to prefer it too. It's pretty fun watching cattle grow. Also for the most part easier, unless you get a bad batch. They say that will happen, and I found that out...

Sell 4 Weights or Sell 5 Weights?

Steve, I've been noticing about even pricing for heifers from 500 to about 750 lbs. All around $170. I've been confused why people are paying so much for certain 4 weight heifers. Some of those are $190. Looks like you got over $200. That's a great time to sell!

    Sale or hold ‘em?

Those prices he offered would have been fine before last week. If you do the math, you can actually receive less per pound selling off the farm than what you would at the sale barn and come out ahead. You will save shrink, commission, and freight.

    Sale or hold ‘em?

If it does rain, this market is supposedly going up. I would hold them for the fun of it. There is surely a better chance of the market going back up than further down. By the market report that TC posted, I would sell the steers and keep the heifers.

    Bills vs steers

Unweaned calves and bulls have been discounted big around here ever since corn went up 2 months ago.

A peek. What the buyers don't like.

If you go to a sale a couple times and watch the whole sale, you can probably figure out what buyers are looking for. Better yet, buy some calves for yourself and sell them after a few hundred pounds. You will figure out what is wanted.

    Open Heifer Pricing ?

That's just buying nice looking heifers from the sale barn and breeding them?

    Open Heifer Pricing ?

Sell fat older cows and replace with cheap bred heifers for about the same price? I know it's best to stick with the current market and not guess, but it seems like drought rebuilding and the feeder market sky high in the future is going to cause some young bred cows to be expensive in the next...

    Open Heifer Pricing ?

I don't have any heifer development plans, but I have noticed about the same price spread. A lot cheaper to buy bred heifers than it is to make them right now.

    Feeder prices

Prices are the same here. There is a lot of value in calves up to about 550 lbs, then it drops off.

    January Feeders

Not bad weight gain. There are a few light 7 weights that will get in the 160s here, but most 7s and all 8s tend to be in the low to mid 150s.

    Calf prices

What I have noticed around here is that there is a good price ($1.70+) for heifers up to about 500 lbs, then drops after that. But heifers from 550-700 don't slide too much, so there seems to still be good VOG there. I got some 435 lb heifers 6 weeks ago. Fortunately, I bought them right so...
