Best Cattle Crosses For Unassisted Calving

Appreciate your updates as a lot of folks ask questions and go away. Glad you are staying in the black, I hear so many folk talking about losing money farming but they are also spending big money on equipment.

The good old days when things were bad

Ill give you that starvation isnt common here. But it sounds like you've been reading marketing material for Bayer and Zoetis and Deere. I question if our success is sustainable. The dollar, debt, phosphate and potash deposits, topsoil loss, plastic.

    Hay Unrollers

Do you have a hay monster too? Gentle old Hereford that goes wild when she sees a round bale.

    Hay Unrollers

Can you unroll them by hand? It works well enough and its a good workout. If you have any grade gravity helps.

    Sell out prices

Goodness greybeard that is modern American medicine at its finest. As for choices there isn't much here with consolidation and the end of independent doctors. Its Sentara vs Valley Health. You got to wade through prescreen for your two minutes of facetime with a real doctor or nurse practioner...

    Deworming.

We worm calves and up to two year olds and cull cows that don't thrive for whatever reason. That's based on the advice of a few folks I know. I had some health issues in November and couldn't do much physical work so did not worm until February. Might just be a one off but they do look smaller...

    Do red hides get discounted?

I think I am moving to red Angus. It might just be the specific cows I have but they seem to do better in heat with fescue and sun. Trouble is finding reasonably priced cows here in Virginia.

Had a round with a bull today.

We use grocery bag duck tied on an old fishing pole. I went into this thread as entertainment as we have all had our bull encounters. But I've learned more than a little something.

    Finding pasture lease

Nothing constructive to add but sympathize w you. Its difficult to find leases in my area too. Same thing - if you don't have relatives and have an "off brand" name you are nothing. And the amazing thing to me is that many existing rentals are over grazed with thistle and brush. No ones worries...

Best Cattle Crosses For Unassisted Calving

I've never seen any mashona or tuli cattle in virginia. I do see some in other locations but reasonable prices seem to be confined to states like TX and AL.

Man doesn't consume beef cattle milk, true or false?

Isnt there a grass based raw milk seasonal herd out your way? Shenandoah county lost another one this January. I have two middle school aged kids and both were milking there and so they are super disappointed.

    Beefmaster Angus bull

Be careful of “experienced cattlemen” Might know cattle and might know people.

    Buyer beware

There are a lot of folks in the cattle cattle business who misrepresent their cattle and/or believe their cattle are gold. The liars do most of the trading, I get too see them at every market and most of the Craigslist ads. Who here hasn’t bought bred heifers and not got screwed? Learned that...

Temp electric fence I need advice just arrived

I also introduced single strand electric by calling cattle into a pasture, so that they were already excited and on the move. They also have less chance of getting shocked if they move quickly through the fence. Ill take my hottest energizer (Cyclops Super 12J) and put it on a short little...
