investment project, what are your cost per cow

Aaron, You imply to put a value on pasture grass is nuts. To establish permanent pasture takes machinery and implements. My time, sweat and blood maybe free, but Diesel, fertilizer and seed aren’t! Rod

investment project, what are your cost per cow

Cow eats 4 ton a year. More on pasture. Rather out of the barn or the pasture, grass has a value. If I figure pasture grass at 50% the value of what I put in the barn. That figures out to $420 grass only. Figure in fuel, minerals, exc. and I would probably be up with Caustic. I donate my...

    Longhorn question

You can find all the diversity you like right here in the Northwest and save yourself a lot of money on transpiration. If your looking for registered stock they all have pedigrees to compare bloodlines with. Your bull will have the most impact on your herd and it is less expansive to ship a bull...

    Help Please !

Joy in Texas, You may have a problem with toxicity from the buttercups. They have the little yellow flowers on them. It looks like all they have to eat in the photo is buttercups. Do a search, but I think this could be a real problem.

    Is this legal?

Last summer in the 100 degree heat, I was driving an old 1956 silage truck around to the back of this dairy, where we were bagging silage for them. As I came around the corner of the dairy a loader blocked the road. I could see the road was wet from a water cannon hitting that section. By the...

    ? on liquid nitrogen

Alan, Glad you enjoyed the site. It is a photo album site offered by Earthlink. You need to be connected to use it and is slow working on dial-up. It is hard to get help if you need it, very limited, and expensive, although easy to use. I just purchased the Dreamweaver 8 program along with the...

    ? on liquid nitrogen

Aaron is right on the money with his explanation of the nitrogen spilling. Surprisingly, the sight mentioned is mine and I took the photos. The only reason we filled the tank outside was for the photo. I think the boiling point of liquid nitrogen is around –288 Fahrenheit. > ( I am on dial-up...

    Thawing semen

Talking with the semen-freezing technician today. He said thawing straws out, it’s best to thaw them out fast. I keep my cito thaw at 95 degrees, but contrary to what I thought, he said 90 was better and that 98 was to warm. I didn’t ask him about the extenders and what if any affect that might...

    Thawing semen

I was talking with the tech that was here to collect semen. He was telling me that one of his clients uses the ice water thaw on their straws and felt conception had improved allot. I thought the theory might be less shock to the semen, plus the temp would be on a constant upward rise and not...

    Thawing semen

Just wandering if anyone has tried ice water thawing semen and if they saw any improvement over warm water thawing. Rod

    Cows well traveled?

Seems kind of high to me also. Maybe they meant the average cow would pass through 5 states. Rod

    Cow With Cracked Hooves

I have a cow with split hooves. I take her toes off and round them over good so she brakes over easy. There is a world of difference after I do this in the way she gets around. Rod

    Bull managment

I think that would have allot to do with the wind. I've smelled bacon and eggs out on the ocean when there wasn't a boat in sight. Rod

    Bummer!

That's interesting I will make a metal note and see if I can't pick up on that. I am on my fourth year and just recently seemed to make a giant leap in my efficiency. One thing I did last fall was to keep the productive track out of a cow I had to put down. I laid this out on the counter and...

    Bummer!

Dun, you got my curiosity up. Seems to me sometimes the cervix is real nice and firm and other times it is softer and wants to melt away the more you manipulate it. Would this have anything to do with what you are referring to?( being able to feel if the cow is ready )
