    Could calf be dead?

I don't see how they can hide a calf in 6in tall grass in an open field but they sure do sometimes. I drove my pasture three times one year only to find it out in the open, couldn't see it until you were right on top of it.

heifer doesn't want to claim calf.

Put some vanilla extract on the calf and a little bit on the heifers nose. She should start licking her calf off.

    Cow drool...

One sure sign of a deceased cow is lying on their side with legs stretched out straight. Even a cake boy could recognize those symptoms.

    Cow drool...

I'm glad your cow is fine and you did NOT take the advice to sell her right away. That was a logical and smart decision on your part. For the record I wasn't calling you an idiot for your question, because it was a good question but the answers you got were controversial at best.

    Cow drool...

There is no such thing as a quick or easy question on here anymore. You have to ask a question, then sort thru everyone's BS then research it elsewhere. I personally wouldn't take ANY of NC Liz 2 or 3 advise and I for dam sure wouldn't sell/cull a cow simply because she drools, if she's fine...

Get off my foot!!! Best/worst experience??

Mine just happened about two weeks ago. I was behind one of my gentlest cows trying to push her down the alleyway by twisting her tail. She got as far as the chute and decided to back-pedal. I tried to jump on the pipe alley but wasn't fast enough. Her butt pushed against my right hip and my...

    Ear Tagging Commercial Calves

It's a lot easier to treat a sick calf when you know which one it is. If no calves have tags, how do you know what has been treated and which hasn't? Seems like a wreck waiting to happen, especially with 55 head. I'm betting that one battle with pinkeye will change your mind on not tagging

    A.I. Question

You could just sync your cows in groups and put the bull in with them. I don't know how many a bull could naturally service on synched cows but it's a thought. I heard/read somewhere that if you wean your baby calves for about 24hrs that the cows sometimes come in heat on their own. I don't...

    Bred cow / heifer prices?

My banker calls this "sticker shock". Where people see the sticker price or asking price and think its way too high. Then after a while you'll settle in and get used to these prices, and probably buy some for that price or higher by then. That price may seem high right now but you'll have a hard...

    Any chemists out there?

I worked at a feed plant that uses DGS ( distillers grain solubles) same as dried only in liquid form, and if I remember right the solubles had a negative PH. We had to adjust the formula to get the Ph back to neutral. This contradicts what your saying Liz, I'm afraid your mistaken.

Times like this remind me of why I try not to post too often! I just sit back and watch the fireworks

    Heavy Bred Prices

Last week we had bred cows bring $2450-$2600. The sale has had limited supply of decent cows/pairs all winter long.

    Hay equipment

People forget too easy what hay cost in bad years and only remember the good years when hays cheap. So your saying that you have enough pasture to run 30-40 more cows without pasturing your hay ground? AND are you ready to buy enough hay to feed them? If you have 40 more cows, your gonna want...

    Hay equipment

If your equipment is in good shape and paid for, I think you'd be foolish to sell it and totally rely on someone else to do the baling. If your equipment was in poor shape and you'd need to upgrade, then that's a different story. If you have enough pasture to feed more cows, then go buy more...

Important question....just getting into the cattle business-

How do you know what the dams were then? I could see breeding up to 87% but how do you register them if you don't know the history of the pedigree? You might get full bloods but not register able cows.

Important question....just getting into the cattle business-

PS --- If you are interested in registered cattle, two comments ... anyone (if given enough time) can up-breed any ol' cow to a 'purebred' of whatever breed, but breeding fullbloods is a whole other ball of wax (with more responsibility to preserving the best parts of the breed, regardless of...

How long to get herd you wanted?

Even if you look at the "big" boys that have been in business a long time, you still see them culling and adding better genetics. It will never be as good as it gets, and if you think your herd is there, you simply gave up.

    sweep tub and alley

I've seen some slick homemade ones out of used grain bin tin. Already curved at the right angles, all you gotta do is set the posts and gates.
