ran a calf to death? How to avoid?

Ahh okay. Yeah i do have experience, but admittedly not as much as many of the other members on here. But the fact that I own no cattle was really uncalled for, a stupid reason for picking on me for posting the way I did. I may not own a big cow-calf herd like a few others on here do, but at...

ran a calf to death? How to avoid?

You're not mistaken, it was me and my family that did that. Why do you ask?

ran a calf to death? How to avoid?

Yeah...I guess four years of university didn't help in this situation...

ran a calf to death? How to avoid?

You can get posts with no emoticons and they'll be nothing more than for entertainment purposes too. Sometimes a post with lots of emoticons isn't necessarily a sign that that post is full of BS or adds no value. Just saying. And the "ignore" feature is more about adding someone to your...

ran a calf to death? How to avoid?

Bring it on. I started this sh!t storm anyway so I deserve it. As for the predator thing, here's a little-known fact about me: according to the Chinese zodiac, I'm a tiger, so that might have something to do with it all.

ran a calf to death? How to avoid?

Apparently, yeah, which turned out to be a big mistake, and a really stupid one at that. :dunce: :bang:

ran a calf to death? How to avoid?

Since I've been getting some flack for saying what I did (even AFTER I apologized to the OP!!) here's why my and the two consecutive posts were like the way they were: The thing we first noticed and obviously could not ignore was the title ran a calf to death. So sorry I was the first one to...

ran a calf to death? How to avoid?

Yeah well...I have to admit I already do that lots already on a few other sites...still learning as I go, and certainly learn lots from even just reading the posts on CT. Heck if I had cattle I'd probably be posting a lot more than I do now, but since I don't....better let the more experienced...

ran a calf to death? How to avoid?

What's that got to do with this?? I was just stating the obvious, the fact that I don't own any cattle has nothing to do with how or why I replied to this thread. Yeah I may have been a bit harsh, and sorry to the OP for being as such, but I only assumed what was the obvious from the first post...

ran a calf to death? How to avoid?

I think you just answered your own question. You ran it to death, you overworked it, and you just made things far worse than what they started off with. Ever heard of CALM handling?? Yes, you shouldn't have chased the crap out of this calf, just let him be, coax/bribe him back in...

    Newbie with questions about crossbreeds

Why not start with some cross-bred cows and go from there? You can play around with any bull you like with a good cross, especially maybe a red-baldie (Herf-RA) cow. Just a suggestion. And :welcome:

    baldy question

Probably, but most if not all "brown" baldies are referred to as red baldies, including Herf crosses. It's a bit more simpler that way rather than getting into real specifics or technicalities especially at sale time.

GM grass linked to Texas cattle deaths

Ironically, prussic acid is a form of cyanide, more specifically hydrocyanic acid: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/CropNe ... rnhart.htm

    Neighbor's cattle profits

You all said yourselves the biggest costs in raising cattle are feed, fuel and fertilizer. What I see that you guys seem to be missing is that if you reduce the costs = minimize the usage of these three main expenses, you will end up with a lower cost per cow. The biggest thing that must take...

    Custom Grazing Operation visit

JS, I think that's one of the other reasons he unrolls the hay like that in the early spring. Of course it sets back the grass, but he does it so that it adds more organic matter, or litter and increase water-capacity of the land. Regolith, I remember agman talking about that before. What's...

    Custom Grazing Operation visit

Still kicking myself for not posting this sooner. Oh well. Anyhow, I went on a tour to a custom grazing ranching operation a ways out from where I live several weeks ago. I got a personal tour since I was one of a couple potential employees to help out on this operation. Didn't get the job of...

I think you're right, not to mention the fact I've gotta study a few other things and potential opportunities as well. Some interesting insights and experiences with this loan business, everyone, thanks for sharing. And thanks for the info on judging teeth on cows, though I wonder if there any...
