    Today's workshop

That dollar a day is where I aim, before labour and finance. Finance is my major cost. last year our growing season was not four months long, makes it tough, need a sharp pencil.

    So it's still not spring

If you were here that could snap started then and did not let up till this week.

    Buying lightweight heifers

If you have good easy calving bulls breeding them is possiable without a wreck, but we lost a heifer just this week as she got stuck head down on her back on a hill. ` Need a good yard, and need to pay attention with heifers, I only have 60 this year :)

    So it's still not spring

Snowing here again, and we are still plowing over a foot of snow to find places to put calves. There is still snow in lows of over two feet. Ugg. Saturday night was the first night since the start of November it did not free hard here. Had to stop selling hay the local people we supply horse...

    Trees and fence

High tensile smooth wire run very hot, and remove all the dead timber. At least when a tree falls on the high tensile it normally returns to being a fence when you cut the tree.

    Cattle or Pasture?

Use more cattle and bought in hay with rotation grazing to increase your pasture :) Under stocking can be as bad for pasture as over stocking, so I am a firm believer that the two go together. Here by slowly increasing the stocking I hope to increase the pastures production to allow more...

Flotation Implement tire vs trailer tires

On every single machine that runs in a field you need to run as wide and tall tyres as possible, at the lowest inflation pressure possible, to reduce the compaction that said tyre causes on the ground. Taller tyres also reduce the rolling resistance, so they are easier to pull.

    Mobile Fence idea

HT will stand a lot of deer pressure, just avoid kinks when handling it as they provide a week spot that will break. Run hundreds of miles of poly wire and had some issues with deer, but many fewer than you would think. This year in heavy brush going across known paths only had the fence down...

Some food for thought for beginners.

Erm Brazil produces lots of cheep grass fed beef, lots of others do too. Huge difference between economic systems when there is government hand outs involved, or the whole cost are not added up, or the best of grain fed is compared to the worst grass fed. Grazing animals thus avoiding the use...

    Attempting to bale tomorrow

With the New Holland it is really important to have the windrow good, nice and even. Really helps with feeding into the machine. Pressure for the bale, I had it set fairly high to get a nice tight bale. In a good windrow they can really roll up the material. When things get a little away from...

    Working cattle questions

I have cut and band, like banding way more, and I am faster at it. So generally band as soon as the calf is dry and has sucked, so in the first 24 hrs, and I sit the calf on it's but like a sheep about to be sheered. Gravity helps me and the position calms the calf and cow, and leaves me mostly...

    Solar power

Solar put in today and the panels are good for 25 years or more. Yes batteries need replacing, maybe. Go with a gen-set and will that little Honda still run in 25 years time, and how much fuel will it need? and will it start when you need it to? Electric systems are great for long time use...

    Stocking density

could be they bought them for the correct money and will hold them, may be they know something (or think they do) about the price in 6 months.

    Profit on stockers

Remember that there is more than one way to skin a rabbit not all stockers have to be in yards, they can gain on strip grazed annual mixes, or be in yards with by products (not just the normal dsg etc) Big is not always better or cheaper, even in yards a small old feed wagon on a few head can...

    Stocking density

As long as they are only in one place for a short time this is good. Very high density for a short time can be very useful. Sure are a few head there.

    Veterinary Feed Directive 2017

I've never used any of those drugs on my cows. Did a doctor have to write a prescription for the patient to get and receive the "big gun" antibiotics? But any anti biotic's that are used may take out those that are not resistant to VRE etc, leaving those that are. Before the use of GMO's...

Best ear tag for staying in?

I like the allflex tags, but it is nice to use the old style metal Ketchum tags as well. That way when a tag is lost it is easy to tell who the cow is. Even ear tattoos can get very hard to read.

    Veterinary Feed Directive 2017

Who pays government? Big business has vets in there operations, so they get past the regs. Vets want regs as they get paid. Big phama wants regs as they can get around them. They pay for them after all. Then there is the issue that we simply just do not need all of the chemicals and...

    Traditional Calf/Cow ver Heifers Only

Calving heifers is not quite the same as calving out cows. If you know where the heifers come from, and the bull that was used, and you have the time and attention to detail to do an A1 job there may be a margin there. Does not take very may issues and you have lost any slim margin there may...

    Price of bred heifers/cows?

It is a quality and quantity thing. If you have good home grown heifers then that is the way to go. If you need more, or better quality then better to look outside, and may be take a long term view on the cost, higher priced bought in heifers this year to allow for breeding your own in future.
