    Thanks folks!

Had my first one die on me

Yes he’s been on grain since before weaning. His intake was increased a little but not enough to cause problems. No jaundice. And he was born here on my farm. What causes a respiratory response that is so deadly? Any preventive actions I should take in the future?

Had my first one die on me

This was a 20 month old steer in great condition. I switched him a little over a week ago to a pasture that had 3 weaned calves on it the past two months. I moved two of those calves back in with the herd and kept one to feed out and butcher early. My wife called me this past Thursday early...

Used my Vet Gun for the first time

I also have the Vet Gun brand. I used to put out grain and walk among them, but a couple of them think its a fun time for target practice - at me with their hooves! So this is payback. And still no dewormer as of yet.

Used my Vet Gun for the first time

It works great! It was so easy to walk among the herd and just shoot them. It was kinda fun too, my least favorite got to go first! :D My cattle's reaction to the shot was just like you see on the youtube videos, very mild. Much easier than running them through the chute. Within 15 minutes...

My cattle don't seem to like minerals

I'll have to look into Vitaferm. I put a bag of Purina out in the spring and most of it is still there - 6 adults on the pasture. Edit: Closest dealer is 45 miles. Think I'll try dry molasses.

My cattle don't seem to like minerals

My small herd of Belties don't consume much of the granular minerals I put out. The only minerals they seem to like is the tub variety which includes molasses. I've put out Purina wind and rain from TSC on a few occasions and they never finish the bag. They're all healthy and well...

    banding bull calves

My bull was around 400-500 pounds when I used the zip bandits. The business is 30 miles from my place. Last time I called them they said they’d be back selling soon. She sent me a 10 pack for free as a sample.

    banding bull calves

Yes both myself and my buddy just started using them. Worked like a charm. My one bull calf was lying around complaining for a day, then went right back to normal on day two.

    I wish.....

Whatever it is it’s highly susceptible to lead poisoning! I’d give it an extra dose.

    Flies flies flies

Thanks for the link. I just ordered one from ValleyVet. Looking forward to some additional target practice for deer season.

How would you rate this mineral tub?

    Sim, I was using Purina.

How would you rate this mineral tub?

Bought from my local feed store. The cattle use it regularly, probably for the molasses, but getting the mineral at the same time. I've tried loose mineral and it seems to see less use than this tub. Is it a decent mineral?

Poison Ivy. How can I cure it?

12 year old thread! Cool. If it’s really bad then a shot is the only way to go. Steroid I believe. Thankfully it doesn’t bother me much.

    Baby Calves and Buzzards

It’s wrong to not be able to protect your livestock. I’m south enough in Michigan that I don’t have much that threatens calves, but the UP has wolves to deal with.

This one’s pretty friendly! Most of mine are but this one is exceptional. She’ll put up with anything for a good brushing.
