frame size/cattle type based on owned or leased pasture

You are right. Anything below a frame 5 starts stepping into the dairy/longhorn/hereford price territory in my neck of the woods.

    A question for commercial guys.

If it was a breeder who had been at it a long time using his own genetics and I had seen positive results from other people, I wouldn’t hesitate to use their genetics. There is a Hereford breeder in my state that uses his own genetics and a lot of commercial people use his bulls on their black...

    Weaning heifers

I separated a few heifers off yesterday to wean off of their mommas. How long would y’all keep them separate from their mothers before putting them back with them? I was thinking 30 days.

    Calving in late summer

A few years I was at a point (2012?)when my cows were calving from August to October. I had to make a decision about wether to stay there and fall calve or leave my bull in year around and move them back to spring calving over a few years. Well several years later I have the results of leaving...

Help! Bull Breeding Heifers w/ Same Father.

LOL, I'm considering keeping a bull calf back this year to breed to a couple of heifers that are his half siblings. Their sire was calving ease. With the prices now, it might be a better idea because they might be better when I sell him after he breeds them.

    Cow with retained placenta?

I have a cow that is 8 years old and had a retained placenta this summer after she calved. This cow has been a good cow and I am well below stocking rate and I cannot afford to buy or gamble on replacement heifers. If she bred back in a timely manner, would you consider keeping her for another year?

Check out this inbred calf born yesterday . Do you see the two heads on her? She is the granddaughter and great granddaughter of OCC Prototype.

    Angus Calving Ease Maternal

I have another question? What's the lowest (Angus) CED and the highest BW that you would use on heifers? I am one of those "one bull" small operators that has to have the same bull for both heifers and cows. My Angus bull now has a CEM of +11. I just like having an above average CEM because I...

    OCC Sires ?

My bull has great docility. He is not a pet,nor do I try to pet him. Every other black or Angus bull that I have had has been a snorter and a pawer , or became one eventually. I am in the process of building my herd back up the next few years and I am trying to do it with high $EN Ohlde bulls...

    Full-time or part-time bull

Where do I go to get him tested? Is there some way that I could draw blood and send it off to get tested?

    Full-time or part-time bull

I have been thinking of breeding my bull to his daughters next year in order to keep my bull and to take advantage of his calving ease, but his sire is a genetic defect carrier.

    OCC Sires ?

My bull is a son of Prototype and the heifer calves that I have got off of him this year look better than the bull calves.

    Spring calving in the South?

That would have been a perfect date back during my ryegrass planting days, but I usually don't quit feeding hay until April 1.

    Spring calving in the South?

Those sound like good ideas if I had plenty of money and free time. I work sunup to sundown 5 days(and sometimes saturdays) a week and do not have much free time and because of that I have to have a cow that fits the situation that I have . I use to plant ryegrass and clovers in the fall, but I...

    Spring calving in the South?

How about if you have plenty of shade, ponds, and the bull works the night shift just to breed a dozen cows during the summer?

    Angus bull question?

    I wouldn't touch Kardashtrash with a 20 foot pole.

    Spring calving in the South?

Well I am keeping my eyes open for a couple of places nearby that are primarily fescue so I put the just weaned calves on the stockpiled fescue for the winter starting about thanksgiving.

    Spring calving in the South?

The fescue gives you a good advantage. I live where the Peidmont meets the SandHills. Most of my land is too sandy for fescue.
