    Prices,Prices,Prices

I would like to know how others figure there gross profit when buying calves in the spring, putting them on pasture, then selling them back in the fall. Using Dave's weights and prices above, buying in May and selling in November below is what I am thinking: From current market report: 492lbs...

Is now a good time to buy calves?

Yes comodities are down as well as cattle but let's look at the cash market, that's what effects me. The actually expenses that a rancher had compared to his income, the net was higher in the last couple years. Darn right there was dollars made in the last couple years...there was "value" in...

Is now a good time to buy calves?

Yes there are a lot of things that effect supply and demand. That last sentence you quoted is interesting, not sure if I agree with him though or maybe he's thinking a little too deep for me!

Is now a good time to buy calves?

I'm hoping we hit the bottom...but my gut feeling is it's going to go down more next year. I'm guessing everyone stocked up on more cattle the last couple years when they were making money and there is still going to be more supply than demand next year. Dave, what auction did you go to? Your...

Buyers, what do you look for?

Yes Ouch! I was curious to see if it would get docked. It was a good healthy calf other than the ears and tail, but it makes sense to me now if there is a chance it could have got it's feet frozen as well.

Is the money ever really lost?

You guys crack me up! I have been checking this thread lately as it is a interesting topic...but all I am learning is how to spell!! My thoughts on this is; if the market stays down you've lost money for the year but have taken some risk out of the next set of calves you bought. On the other...

    Prices,Prices,Prices

With 2014 prices so high, it seems we all knew prices where going to drop either this year or next year. I have been buying small calves in the spring and selling in the fall, so as far as I can tell, I should have hedged on the futures market each year until prices did fall, right? I know...

    Prices,Prices,Prices

I am planning on selling the rest of my calves in November, wish me luck! I figure that November prices can't be lower than they are now...we'll see. I'll have a little more weight on them by then at least.

    Profit per acre ?

I have watched the first three videos on YouTube, it's a very interesting presentation so far. I understand the more pastures you are rotating your cows through, the more feed you got. He also talks about having smaller cows as they are more efficient. My question is how small (lbs) of a cow...
