Advice on building a herd in Central Texas - sale barns vs breeders

In your location I would go with branch's or beefmaster. You need some ear to help dissipate heat. There are docile cattle in every breed and bat shytt crazy cattle in every breed. There are nice cattle and bad cattle at the salebarn. The sale barn advantage is that your eyes are wide open and...

    Sale Barn Bottle Calf Prices

I've bought lots of bottle calves at the salebarn. I've got some sick ones but I've got some really good ones too. I've not had a salebarn bityke calf die on me yet. I've lost some farm buy calves though. At the salebarn I prefer to buy calves split off old cows. I went a month ago to check out...

Price, live weight - finished beef

People are paying $4- $5 a pound hanging weight with processing included. I've got a date for one in October. That is what I will be charging depending on which one I sell. I'll be processing a shorthorn beefmaster show steer and a red Angus heifer if she doesnt get pregnant.

    Fall calves

I went to a mid-America sale yesterday in bristow ok. I thought feeder prices were pretty good. 5 at black steers were bringing 1.50 to 1.70. 6 wts were bringing 1.40 to 1.65. There were some 1000 pounders sold 1.15 to 1.20. Bulls were bringing high 80's. Cows were bringing in the 60's. Bred...

    Bull buying delimma

I love when people update an older post. There was a good discussion a year ago. Knowing how it turned out brings the discussion full circle. The breeder following up is great

Will that dairy sell you a couple of low production cows you can make into nurse cows?

    Salebarn bottle calves

I think you are feeding him right as the 2 bottles of milk are for nutrition and the electrolytes are to get him well hydrated. If he looks really good then stop one electrolyte bottle. After a couple of days stop the other. I hope he makes it for you.

    Salebarn bottle calves

I buy calves like this but not that cheap. I try to get them on my feeding schedule and get them into a clean dry pen asap. I dont give meds right away as some dont need it. I do give them probias right away and every day for a week. I get them drinking my favorite brand of milk replacer...

    Okc stockyards

I'm in central Oklahoma. I've been to okc stockyards a couple of times. The prices were much lower than the prices at mid America in bristow Oklahoma. Payne county stockyards were even higher than okc. Maybe I've gone on off days but it seemed like the place to buy was okc but it was not the...

    Calves sold well

I haven't bought or sold at okc but I have observed the sale multiple times. I would buy there but not sell there. Prices were low compared to mid America in bristow Oklahoma. I have bought and sold there. I've also observed at payne county lots of times. Prices vary a bunch there.

    Yearling bull price

Again she was 17 and had been a great cow for a very long time. I don't know many cows that can raise a good calf every year for that long. She never got up after the birth and was put down. I like the longevity she brings to this calf. If she were a young cow and prolapsed that would be a...

    Yearling bull price

I dont have a problem with a cow that prolapsed on her 16th calf. I dont think too many cows are producing at her age. I'm pretty happy with the longevity and fertility this girl had to offer. Now if the cow was a 4 year old and prolapsed on her third pregnancy, it would be a different story.

    Yearling bull price

His dam was 17. She pushed her uterus out after she had him. She was an awesome cow for many years for the farmer. I raised him on a Jersey cow in the pasture along with her heifer. .....True Grit- sire was black, dam was a red Angus so this bull is heterozygous black so bred to my homozygous...

    Yearling bull price

I understand the color genetics but I want 100% red and no black so that is why I'm going red Angus. I also have 4 registered heifers so I'd like to breed to registered from here on out. We have been building a herd and deciding what we wanted through trial and error. We have many breeds but...

    Yearling bull price

I dont need rid of him bad enough to take slaughter price. He is good to be around and I like him. I'm hoping the calves I get are not all black. I like red cattle better. Thank you all for your comments. I agree with some and not with others but I asked for opinions because I wanted opinions...

    Yearling bull price

I've decided to sell my bull. What do you think would be a fair asking price? He is a yearling (17 months). 70 pound birthweight. Sire was a registered ultrablack, dam was 17 year old red Angus. Bull was raised on a Jersey and nursed 7 months. He is halter broke and really docile but not a...

    Prices are up

I was at the sale today in central Oklahoma. Cow prices compared to a few months are way up. Last fall prices were low. Beef bottle calves were $150-250. Today they were 300-475. One tiny thing that looked an hour old sold for $90. Black steers 350-450 pounds in the fall were 1.40-1.70 Today...
