I need a place to help someone grow/manage grass and hay.

I recieved several phone calls, two even offered me a yearly budget to use in managing/improving their pastures and hay fields. One of those two went so far as to offer to pay me to square bale for them. A set price per bale for every one that hit the ground and that after that it was up to...

I need a place to help someone grow/manage grass and hay.

Hey Dun, Thanks for the reply. No, not because of too many deer, they are just a bit on the teeny side for the most part. No offence intended but the ones further north tend to be way bigger. Thanks again,

I need a place to help someone grow/manage grass and hay.

I've been helping some friends improve their place for the past several years but find it's time to move on to other pastures, so to speak. During that time I've bought the following equipment: AC 190XT diesel, MF 165 diesel, JD 24T square baler, single row tedder, single row rotary rake, 9...

    Spiny Amaranth (spiny pigweed)

I'm trying to find a university study I came across last year about chemical control of spiny amaranth. Best I can recall neither Grazon P&D, 2,4,D or any other pasture herbicides tried wiped it out for good in one spraying. It said the seeds were like crabgrass, continuing to germinate...

    Grazing Fesue with new Clover?

Douglas, I bet that is what you are seeing. This spring I planted I planted red clover in a prepared seedbed pasture on a Saturday, rained Sunday. Checked it Wednesday afternoon and there were little baby clovers poking out of their seeds everywhere.

    Millet

Arkie, You would loose a good part of the feed value, as it starts going downhill when it begins forming seedheads. I also wonder how well it would stand up to high winds once it is fully ripened. It sure wouldn't be my choice for stockpiled forage. JMO

Had to buy a tedder for the hybrid pearl millet hay

Ed, I planted it June 1 and we cut the first of it July 8, so I was only about 8 days late. We had several good rains all through that time period. Wanted to cut it the week before but the rains didn't cooperate. We've been growing it for a few years now, so I sort of knew what to expect...

Had to buy a tedder for the hybrid pearl millet hay

I only have 11 acres of Tiffleaf3 planted for hay, so I'm going to stick with the 2 basket tedder. $2000 is enough of a cash expense for a tedder right now. I just spent another $2000 last week on a tractor repair and I just about refuse to have to make payments. But I truely appreciate the...

Had to buy a tedder for the hybrid pearl millet hay

Vett, I'm thinking the same thing. I told him a little bit ago to just roll up what's down and we will start over.

Had to buy a tedder for the hybrid pearl millet hay

Dang, that millet makes a terribly thick mat when it comes out the back of the mower/conditioner. The no-till drilled Tiffleaf3 was up to my waist and not a seedstalk to be found, even down deep. We mowed the first third of the field last Wednesday; only to be rained on Thursday. The top half...

    What to plant?

For the reeds canarygrass I would worry most that it will get cold enough for a dormancy period. It will certainly handle the wet areas but it needs to go dormant too. Check with your local extension service to see if reeds will grow down there.

    What to plant?

Reed's Canarygrass is a high quality forage that loves wet conditions and will thrive in upland soils too. August would be a fine time to plant it up here in mid Missouri; you might have to wait until September down in Texas though. And you might want to check to see how well suited it is for...

Best time of day to spray weeds?

Jogeephus, I prefer to spray with a lot of water too, but my 200 gallon tank doesn't go very far at 40 GPA. I've found that I get just as good of a kill at 14 GPA as I did at 22 GPA. I want a bigger tank.

Best time of day to spray weeds?

With broadleaf products especially, I don't like to spray when there is too much dew or high temps, particularly coupled with low humidity in the later case. No matter whether you are using ester, low ester or amine formulations, the stuff still fumes to some extent. That's why you can smell...

    Trying to figure it out

After about 6 years, we lost our hunting lease this past fall, on a 1200 acre farm up near Kirksville, Mo. They had a pasture in big and little blue stem. He told me once that the cattle near starved to death on it. Asked him when he turned them in on it? Well, winter of course? Ahhhh, not...

    Millet for Next Year Deal.

Forgot to mention. Yes, using a mower with a conditioner would be very advisable. Crimping the stems will make it dry much faster. I'm figuring for a good 3 days of drying with ours, that's with leaving a 6 inch stubble to help hold it up off the ground and to aid in it tillering out again...

    Millet for Next Year Deal.

Douglas, How many acres are we talking about here? Jogee was saying the other day that Tiffleaf3 won't produce much seed and suggested Tiffseed, I believe. I think he has also said that Tiffseed is a much shorter variety, so that is really going to knock down on the tonnage of hay. Compared...

    Looking for a herbicide to.....

I don't have my Grazon or Forefront labels handy but they would be my first choices. Both are made by DowAgra so you should be able to do a web search for the labels. If memory serves, the only grazing restrictions are for lactating dairy cows, if even that. Good stuff. The only problem you...

    Another Hybrid Pearl millet Question

A couple weeks ago, somebody here was talking about a couple different Tiffleaf millets. But I can't find the thread right now. Anyway, a guy was saying that Tiffleaf 3 didn't produce many seeds and recommended a different one to a fellow that was wanting to raise some for dove hunting. Last...

    Forages for Summer

We buy tractor trailer loads of big square bales of alfalfa from Canada too. It is way nicer than what we can get local and not that expensive, even with the freight.
