Winter is definately not through with us yet. Those ear muffs look prettyl cute.

    Flesh,Fertility&Milk

We use a one to five bcs in Canada. A 7 would be a 3.5 and a 5 a 2.5. We like to calve with a body condition score of 6 which with our grass gives good calving intervals. A cow lactating on grass typically gains flesh through the growing season and shouldn't start losing condition until late...

    Flesh,Fertility&Milk

It is really hard to split fleshing ability and fertility apart. I think it likely comes down to percentages. The odds of a thinner poorer fleshing cow to breed back year after year without missing are pretty slim. A fleshier cow seems to improve the chances. A very fat cow seems to run into...

future breeding stock..what do you think..

Brandon That calf was likely born in the winter or late spring. Ears like that are not very uncommon in calves born in Jan to March. When we sell calves like that buyers discount them because they fear they may have frozen feet as well. I think they really just want them for less. We had...

Hardy breeds / crosses for winter

There are quite a few galloway breeders in Ontario. They are good wintering cattle and they are sooo good to eat.

    Flesh,Fertility&Milk

Where I come from if a cow pulls down from milking then she is pretty poor fleshing. Or else the pasture is real poor. The experts claim a heavier milking cow requires more just for maintenance then does one with less milk. It seems those heavy milking thinner cows raise some real good calves...

    Warts on Bulls foot

Tex Those hairy warts sound really nasty. North of the 49th we don't have anything like that. Is it more a dairy thing because of the concentrated environment in the dairies. Do you have much foot rot down in that country. In Alberta it is far more common in the north then in southern Alberta.

    Breeding age for bulls

A yearling angus bull bred 27 heifers in 30 days for us last July. There were 10 opens. I would bet they didn't cycle. This bull fleshed well and looked excellent in August. He even had a touch of footrot which was treated for and recovered from quickly. All bulls were definately not created...

    Spayed Heifers

Spaying heifers could give one the option of grassing heifers and steers together without all the commotion of bulling. It would work well for us as well when the neighbors simmental bulls are forever lurking through the barb wire. We've been considering it ourselves but don't want to spend a...

    Mary Moo RIP

poor mary moo. Sometimes I wonder as well why the fat cows sometimes but I guess there are more skinny ones leave as well. Perhaps too fat isn't always the best. That was a real nice picture of Mary though. :cry2:

    california bander

Does this california bander have an infinite sizing ability such as one might need to do a prolapse. The calicrate appears to have little made up bands which would only work for castrating. If any one knows of a surgical tubing bander that is capable of elastrating around a prolapsed uterous...

    Need lesson on fence pliers...

Very well explained hippie rancher. We permanently repair all our breaks this way when riding fence. As long as you are careful not to kink the wire it gives a very tight and lasting repair.

    Warts on Bulls foot

Is it a wart or a corn between the toes. Corns can really be an issue with older bulls. Some vets think they can help but I'm not sure. I try and stay away from bulls with corns. We recently bought a bull sight unseen and really like him except the hair between his toes doesn't go right to the...
