    Mad Cow Disease

I was lead to believe that if an animal ingested other infected brain matter that was in the feed that they would get BSE. I have also heard - not that I know if I believe it - but wild elk have been known to carry the disease, so you cannot give blood if you have eaten wild elk? I know that...

    lacertions

Maggots would eat only the dead ragged flesh and actually clean the wound. You are more worried about infection from the bacteria from the flies. I would have called the vet pronto!

My Colorful world of Beefmasters !

Look at the butt on that Bull Calf! Why will you get docked? I am not familiar with guidelines for Beefmasters. I like the Brahman cross calf too! Lots and lots of color that is for sure.

My heifers horn was knowcked off

Bleu Coat works wonders when dehorning. We always spray a good amount right after dehorning. She would be bleeding alot more if you had done it your self. I think she will be fine, but you may want to have the other one taken off so she's even looking. When you spray - it's gonna sting so...

    fructose syrup as cattle feed

I think it would be difficult for them to eat the syrup. And it wouldnt offer them anything other than empty calories. Would you feed that a horse or any other livestock? No. Could you imagine a bunch of cows hyped up on all that sugar?

    6 x 16 stock trailer needed

Have you tried Craigslist for your area? I can usually find some stuff on there. Maybe worth a look.

    Feeding question

Do the heifers have access to grass? Minerals? Hay? These things can also effect how much you should feed. If they are getting a little fat maybe back them off a little? We never sub-fed our cows in the spring and summer since the grass is usually so good.

    Multi species grazing?

Make sure your fences are good - our pigs could find the smallest weak area and get out. Also the rooting may be destructive they could dig out if they wanted.

    Beef Brisket

We always smoke ours over Mesquite. We use a good marinade by Stubbs for beef and baste every time we add more chunks for the smoke. Make sure you still have the fat on the brisket and use a disposable foil pan and cover with foil half way through to prevent it from drying out. Good luck...

    Show Tricks

Wow, that is harsh - one should be able to drench their own calf if needs be without a vet. I agree about the alcohol - if your animal is too nervous for the showring - you havent done your job in preparing for the show. After showing two steers, I was amazed at different techinques used...

    Are beefmasters resistant to pinkeye?

 I wonder if they walk around like that if they would trip on things. Boy would I really like to see that!

    What breed?

Looks like he may have some Limo or Red angus to give him that blush color - or it just could be a bad pic. But Char cross for sure!

    The Red Hide Rebellion

I think honestly - and I know that some of you all will disagree, but I feel that Americans are moving away from prime grade beef. I cannot even get it here, even at the meat markets. Simply because of the fat content. They want a leaner grade of beef that is more healthy, except when they...

    Charging Cow

We had this older Brahman cow, who would charge if any of the cows/heifers had calves on the ground. We knew to give her a wide berth. We also had packs of wild dogs and coyotes, and once we had her we never lost a calf to either. Although I agree that one should be careful around any large...

    Late Bred Cows

I would take them off your hands. It's like a bonus. ;)

    Warts

One of my show steers had a few small warts on it's neck. I used the over the counter wart medication twice daily and they eventually shrivelled up and we pulled them off without hurting the steer too much. Luckily he was easy to work with and didnt mind me messing with him twice a day.

    What Too Start With?

You may want to start with some cows instead of just heifers - especially if you plan on using bulls with them. Personally I prefer Angus or Hereford cross cattle, but it is really all dependant on what you plan to do with them Are the bulls Charlolais cross? I have never seen a colored...
