    Spent grain

My cousin has a micro brewery and they put all sorts of stuff in their batches. Raspberries, peanut butter, pine bows, guava fruit, coffee etc. I always wondered if anything would be bad for the cows. He gives it to a local dairy that blends it into their mix ration. I'm partial to the...

    Dreaded 6:30 am call

My brother got the call at 11:30 one night from the county sheriff that our cows were out at a leased property about 15 miles away. He said they were in a cut hayfield, out of the road and he would stay and watch them until someone got there. He would be in his car in the meantime because there...

    Math me, please!

What's the normal stocking rate on winter wheat for a 300 lb calf? Does that go down a lot when they get closer to 600 lbs? We don't have any wheat grazing in out part of the country. Just curious if they do rotational grazing too?

Make sure you are using a good respirator mask when cutting concrete. The Silica in concrete is almost as bad as asbestos for causing lung damage.

    Slippery Concrete

We wean and condition feeders in a retired dairy barn. We try to leave some straw/manure pack on the floor to give them some traction. After scraping the floor, we try to build up the pack a week or two before work them.

Cut your bolts off flush with the nut if they are excessively long, or put an acorn nut in the end.

    2025 Hay Season

We had square bales at the bottom of our mow that hadn't been feed out in about ten years. New hay was coming in each year before we ever got to the bottom. When we finally switched to all round bales we fed up that old hay and the cows eagerly cleaned it right up. It was very good quality early...
