    Cover Crops After Hay?

I think the legumes in the mixes generally produce not only enough nitrogen for the plants in the mix but also for plants already in the field. That's at least what people tell me. I would just likely choose a mix with mostly annuals. You make a good point with the issue of harming the current...

    Cover Crops After Hay?

We actually almost never do a second cutting. We usually graze the regrowth down and let it rest. I was thinking about planting the cover crop after the grazing since the manure is on the field and the thatch is down. I'd like to do this to winter graze.

    Cover Crops After Hay?

I farm I recently toured does this. After the farmer cuts hay on a field, he puts in a multi-species cover crop and let's cattle graze it in fall and winter. He claims it has greatly boosted soil fertility. Has anyone else done this or something similar?

    Pasture Fertilization Tips?

I agree completely. Id rather rotational graze and rely on manure disbursement with some chemical fertilizer when needed rather than just constantly dump urea on my place like most of my neighbors do. They have no pasture. By September, their fields look like dry lots. They stock way to many...

    Pasture Fertilization Tips?

I plan on doing some grid sampling (my old job actually) and going off of the results. I plan on trying to preform MIG grazing to try to extend my grass as much as possible. I read a lot of Greg Judy and really enjoy his work/thoughts on pasture.

    Pasture Fertilization Tips?

I'm looking for opinions on fertilizing pasture for maximum utilization (located in Central MO). Our renter currently adds P&K with a little N in spring and then puts more N, P, &K in late summer/early fall for an extension in fall grazing. He also frost seeds cover. I like this plan but I'm...

    Cull Cow Profits?

That's what I've been thinking. I unfortunately don't have an "eye" yet. I do have the open mind though. I have been looking into this because I heard there good compliments to a stocker operation.

    Cull Cow Profits?

I've read several posts on this forum about making money will cull cows and I'm looking for advice on possibly entering this market. I've look over many posts and have found there are three main ways people are making money (or attempting to) with cull cows. 1. Buy Cull Cows in fall, overwinter...

    New Venture Ideas

Thank you for the detailed comment. The feeder calf market where I'm at isn't that bad but we just pulled out of one similar. Heifers gong for under a dollar a pound were not uncommon about two years ago back home. I'll probably be doing a majority of dairy bull calves if I do this; this is why...

    New Venture Ideas

I'm currently leaning more on the nurse cow thing with potentially running stockers with the grafted calves when there weaned. I hear the standard is to run 3 rotations on a Holstein with 3-4 calves a rotation including the cows natural calf. There are a few dairies around so sourcing...

    New Venture Ideas

I enjoy almost everything with cattle. I know a couple guys who wean lower weight calves consistently I have decent relationships with. I just seemed to like this part of the industry because of the flexibility.

That's what I was thinking Ken. Do you have any more advice? I've read a lot on the stocker business but I've never had any hands on experience with it.

    New Venture Ideas

Hi everyone. I'm an ag student who is currently studying for a bachelor's in Agribusiness :cboy: . In about two years I'll have the opportunity to have my own enterprise on the family farm (115 acres). My issue is I'm still not sure what to start out as. My family wants to do a normal cow calf...
