    Frame Score

Looking at AI sires for 2024. Trying to understand Frame Score vs actual measurements. One bull has a MFS (I assume mature frame score) of 4.9 with a mature height of 56 in. Another has a score of 5.2 and a mature height at 33 months of 54 in. Does that make sense?

    Sandblasting Old Gates

Anyone have any experience/wisdom sandblasting old gates? I priced out some new gates this weekend. oi. There are an abundance of old gates on the farm that I've sorted inherited. But they are old, rusty, and need some tlc. On the plus side they are old, rusty, and well made. I've never...

    Cone Feeder Risk

Arrived home yesterday afternoon and found a long yearling had gotten their head stuck in the bale feeder (cone style) and hung/suffocated themselves. My first thought was that the animal had gotten some unremoved sisal twine around their neck and strangled (we've had twine catch on ear tags...

    Post ET heat window

We implanted our first embryos a few weeks ago and I'm curious if cows cycle 18-24 days after the implant of the embryo, or if they cycle sooner since the embryo is implanted roughly 7 days after you would normally AI the cow. Thanks!

    Bull Development Weaning to Breeding

My small operation has been AI only, but we decided to retain a home raised bull that we just weaned. For those here that have experience -- any tips/advice to get this bull from now to breeding in July? The bull will be 14+ months when we'd like to employ him. We have always retained...

    Solid Panel Gates

I needed to replace an old wooden gate built out of 2x6s. It was effective, but quite heavy. I've rebuilt the main gate frame and I have it hung on the hinges I inherited and I'm wondering about filling in the gaps with some solid OSB board rather than leaving gaps by using 2x6. My main...

Any recommendations for a waterline heat tape/cable brand/model/source?

    Waterer Rise Tube

I have a cattle waterer in the middle of a bldg surrounded by a concrete floor. The water line and riser tube are 50+ years old. As such, the riser tube has "silted" in and it no longer provides adequate ground heating during late winter. The riser tube is also only 10". I'm looking for...

    Cattle Feeder Cone/Poly/Steer Stuffer

Doing some upgrading this fall for winter feeding. * Any recommendations on a Poly bale feeder? Possibly a poly cone style? * Any recommendations on other cone style bale feeder? I've used a local version called Hay Manager. Really like them, but in the winter they can be very hard to...

    Pocket Gophers

I'm curious what are people's thoughts on pocket gophers/pocket gopher management? I've started to wonder if they are doing more good than harm in some of my pastures. They don't seem to get quite as out of control as prairie dogs, nor do their burroughs appear to create massive holes (just...

    Feeding Fresh Alfalfa

Ran into an issue earlier this week -- while trying to make baleage some alfalfa/grass mix got dry on me while baling (100 degrees/35 mph wind). Anyway, the driest bales deformed while wrapping them with our single bale wrapper. They would fall off the wrapper and the net result was that I...

    Yield Grade/Kill Data

Looking for any data/information from really any source that provides data on offspring carcass yield grades and quality grades for AI sires. Any breeders out there provide that? Anyone have any data of their own?

Alley Design -- Solid walls or see-thru

I'm making some small changes to my alley and trying to decide if I should have solid walls or half walls or see through bars. The alleyway is inside/under a roof if that makes a difference. Just curious what others opinions are (if there is an old thread you can point me too that is fine as...

    Rotational Grazing Advice Needed

Looking for some guidance on rotational grazing/MIG. I've been practicing this for the last five years or so and slightly modifying my set-up each year. I've been struggling with cool, wet springs with no grass and then a sudden change where all my pasture is mature in a matter of days. 1...
