    need de-horning advice

We just did a similar procedure a five year old cow. The tip of one of her horns was getting close to her eye. We sawed off about an inch back from the tip. There was no bleeding and it was very easy on the cow. Just make sure you get her head still and be careful near her eye.

    Tractor Insurance

Thanks everyone for your responses. JT, I also thought that because the tractor is owned by a business, insuring it would be more costly. However, that fact didn't seem to affect the price one way or the other, since we don't use the tractor off farm for custom baling, etc. The quote I...

    Tractor Insurance

We are trying to find insurance for our tractor. The tractor is about 3 years old and worth about 20 to 25K. It is kept on land owned by the family business; the tractor is owned by the business as well. So, a homeowner type policy probably won't work. The only quote I have received was far...

Tex. A&M Beef Cattle Short Course

Thanks for all of your responses. It sounds like a really good program so I signed up. Michelle, yes the national ID system is a topic. I am afraid that I have not kept up with that issue in order to form an opinion on whether or not it is a good idea. So, that particular discussion should...

    feeding hay?

no, if the grass is good, you should be fine without hay during the late spring and summer. Just make sure they have good water. You should probably also put out minerals and salt. We also like to feed range cubes a few times a week, especially in the colder months when our cows are pregnant...

Buying cattle at the sale barn

I suppose it depends on your area, but we have had pretty good luck with our purchases at sale barns. Sometimes that means going home empty handed, though. Also, in certain cases, disposition can be a matter of a cow's environment and handling. Just my opinion.

    Cattle housing?

Not only is the housing situation for these cattle abnormal, it is cruel. I agree that animal control, the humane society or some other agency should be contacted.

    Weaning

We purchased seven bred cows last fall and they calved in late February/early March. What is the best method for weaning these calves? Also, any comments on the timing of weaning would be helpful. Thanks.
