Why did no one tell me?!...:)

Another thing to think about is infection in those teats caused by biting flies. It also appears to be swollen above the teats. Commonly called summer mastitis and is more common in hot dry summers. Never seen it in a bull, but no reason it can’t be. His testicles seem to be small which is...

    Bull breeding bred cows

It’s all in the hormones. A cow actually still has 21 day cycles even when bred. Progesterone from pregnancy suppresses signs of heat- just not all the time. I once had a cow that cycled every 21 days except after she calved and then she was only off by 1-2 weeks.

    840 Tags

I'm not sure if all states are offering free 840's. APHIS has allotted 840's to all states as far as I know. Missouri is on its second allotment of 50 thousand. Contact either your local large animal vet or state dep't of agriculture.

    840 Tags

840 tags are free in most states at least for the time being. The metal NUES tags are being phased out. In 2-3 years the metal tags will not be recognized as official ID.

Worst AI year ever. What happened?

It sounds to me like the water temp was too high. I’ve bred a lot of cows and had decent conception by thawing semen in the gun under my arm pit or in the cow. Would do that in hot weather, but it does OK in cold weather. I wonder if you have 1/4 cc straws. They are far more temperature...

    Deworming ?

You are correct. Use one drug until it is no longer effective, then switch. We are slowly learning what the goat people learned the hard way about resistance. 1) There is probably no reason to deworm adults on a herd basis, only individuals as needed and they should be on a cull list. 2)...

    Deworming ?

My inclination would be to cull the heifer if she is the only one in the group to have that problem. When rotating dewormers you should consider the class of the drug, not the drug. Ivomec, Dectomax, Long Range, Eprinex are all the same class, so if there is resistance to one of that group...

    Lazy show heifer problems

You have a nice heifer. My kids have shown some Tango calves and they have a different attitude. Not bad, just different. Feeding Red Angus show heifers is a little different than other breeds. They are easy keepers, so you can get them over conditioned quickly. The trick is to keep them...

    Dang cow

Take your dog for a walk in the pasture. The cow will find calf for you if it’s still alive

    Shrink

Don’t know Canadian laws. I’m in southwest Missouri. Love Alberta, though. It’s the only time I’ve seen it snow indoors

    Shrink

I don’t think it is legal for a livestock market to do that. You should check with Packers and Stockers Administration. At the very least look at the tariff (charges allowed) sheet at the auction. They should by law have it easily visible and if they charge shrink it by law is on that sheet...

    ProstaMate Effectiveness ?

P.S.- if they are not cycling then prostamate won’t make them cycle.

    ProstaMate Effectiveness ?

If they are already cycling, you would expect about 60% to cycle off of one shot of prostamate. If they don’t show heat with a single shot of prostamate (or Lutalyse, estrumate) then just luck of the draw you caught them in the wrong part of their cycle (no CL) for it to work. If you gave a...

    How did this happen??

Not going into good labor is a very common problem with first calf heifers. I’ve always assumed it was pain that caused them to not push and therefore not dilate. Most of the time if you can get them through that first calf they will be fine with subsequent deliveries. Show heifers are the...

    Cut now or wait

cut it now with a bush hog, let it grow back and bale it this fall. Protein and energy content will be better than if you had baked it this spring. Right now it is glorified straw

    Breeding to create calm cows

In my opinion, angus docility EPDs track pretty close to actual docility. However, it doesn’t take a whole lot for someone who doesn’t know how to handle cattle to ruin a docile animal. We’ve been breeding for docility for 10-15 years now and have culled several for being too docile. We...

Advice for AI on some heifers

The reasoning behind the 7&7 protocol is to get those “younger” follicles to ovulate as opposed to “older” senescent follicles

    3rd Eyelid...? (Nictating Membrane).

Have your vet remove the third eyelid. Simple procedure and will buy the cow a few more years. Do it soon, though because those pre cancerous lesions blow up in mid to late summer and treatment then becomes more problematic.
