Irrigating from a pond, no electricity

Lots of Alfalfa grown here. Wasn't sure what would be best for pasture grass. Can you overseed with Alfalfa? right now it's mostly volunteer grasses and weeds.

Irrigating from a pond, no electricity

Some good thoughts.. I can figure out the thread thing. Not sure how well the flood thing would work out on a field that has some slope to it. I hadn’t really thought about the over pressure thing but I could put a gauge near the outlet and throttle the pump back to so that it’s not...

Irrigating from a pond, no electricity

Could use some advice. I’m looking for a small, gas powered pump to run one or two sprinklers to pump out of a small, spring fed pond that we have. I have about 5 acres of land (with a pond next to it) and want to get some water on but there is no electric service close. I can’t guess the inflow...

    Cow nursing goats?

That did occur to me after posting.... Might just have to try and keep a bag of kids milk replacer handy.

    Cow nursing goats?

Hi Alan, Where are you located? I’m in the Banks area. Crossbow will kill Scotch Broom. I simply haven’t done anything with our land for many years and it’s not “old growth”. I’m not “organic” so I use some spray but try to keep it at a minimum. Mostly just spray around the perimeter, not...

    Cow nursing goats?

We are newish and are up to 7 Jerseys. We have one 7 year old nurse cow nursing 3 steers. I have spent the last month clearing overgrown fields of some really heavy scotch broom, black berries… I really like the idea of adding in a goat or three to help me maintain the hard work I have put in...

    Nurse cow?

Thanks very much everyone. Yes the link worked just fine. I was wondering if I’d have to restrain her to get started… this is just what I was looking for.

    Nurse cow?

Just picked up 4 Jersey bull calves and am pondering getting a nurse cow from the same farmer. Will one nurse cow typically let and have enough milk for 4 calves? Currently bottle feeding now. I would think that it would be better and more productive to have natural, fresh milk than calf...

So what impact does breed Vs. feed have on beef flavor?

Thanks for the feedback! Will do more reading regarding finishing and feeding! We have many younger, health focused friends who are into the "grass fed" thing. Might be an interesting experiment two steers side by side.

So what impact does breed Vs. feed have on beef flavor?

This may be a little lengthy but stick with me. We have lived on 38 acres for the last 25 or so years and up to now I really haven’t done anything with it, been busy doing other things. I’m now looking to recover the land from the brush and scotch broom and want to raise a few cattle for myself...
