    NBC says 2000 cattle dead?

July issue of the Angus Journal had an article on the benefits of shade. http://www.angusjournal.com/ArticlePDF/ ... 007.10.pdf

    Angus temperment

In that particular visit, we weren't trying to head them off, just get within 100 feet to get a look at them. I've never seen cattle that skittish.

Whatever yall want to talk about

Never had this problem before. We raise Angus. If they're cycling, they're extremely quiet about it. The rest bred back with no problems, these last two aren't showing any signs. Wait till after fair and try again.

Whatever yall want to talk about

Palpated them, nothing going on. Estrous Alert hasn't been touched. Studies have shown conception rate and heat cycles drop during extreme heat. Bought a flush a few years back, ended up with one embryo. Vet attributed the poor performance to the high heat and humidity.

Whatever yall want to talk about

This heat is causing some cattle not to cycle. Should have started AI'ing earlier.

    Angus temperment

Spend some time around your cattle, makes a huge difference. Get them used to having you around. A few years ago, we went to a large Angus operation to find a heifer for our daughter. They were separated in HUGE pens, about fifty in a group. When we were in there looking at them, they would...

    Cattle Identification

Cows are numbered in the left ear, from 1 to 100. Both sides of tag. In addition, on back of tag is my phone number in case they get out. Calves get the same number in their ears, temporarily. Calves also get the sire abbreviation on their tag. If they stay, they get the next number in...

    grounding

We use three ground rods, each ten feet apart to ground the charger. If your system was working previously, you have a short on one of your hot wires. It could be one big short, or lots of little shorts. Hard to trouble shoot without some additional information. Tell us how your fence is...

    Angus cow need advice

You have one cow. I wouldn't be worried about a potential difference of $6 a year and a half from now when you sell a calf. First priority is getting a live calf on the ground, that you didn't have to pull.

    Best type of eartags

We've been using Cal Tags the last three years. Haven't lost a single one, easy to read from a distance, and we have them engrave our ranch name and phone number on the backs, in case someone escapes.

My advice is go to another forum where you aren't attacked for every question. Too many "experts" on here who would rather attack your spelling and punctuation than answer your question. Apparently they are born with knowledge. Try http://www.advantagecattle.com/forum/fo ... FORUM_ID=1 or...

Should somebody stand up and say something?!

Our fair has been going in that direction for the last several years. Going back to the old rules, and actually enforcing them. I agree that it should be the kid's project. Save the jocks for the jackpot shows.

    US Meat goats

Showing meat goats is nothing like showing dairy goats. Look for sanctioned shows in your area. Two largest organizations are the IBGA, http://www.intlboergoat.org/, and the ABGA, http://www.abga.org/. We got started several years ago with a catch-a-goat project through 4H. If that's...

    Really irritates me..................

I've better ways to spend my time then waiting for someone to come and pat me on the back. If someone comes up and asks for directions, do you tell them to take off, knowing you will never see them again? I was taught to help people in need, and not expect something in return.

    weaning moon

Friend of mine castrates and dehorns by the phase of the moon. Grew up on a dairy, so he has a lot of experience with it. For whatever reason, works out better. Worst case, you wait an extra 28 days. If you can't, go ahead and wean/castrate/dehorn.

    hooves need trimming...is that normal

I guess we'll keep going in circles. I'll try and keep it simple. Sandy soil = Occasional hoof trimming. Good cow = Not going to cull for an annual $25 hoof trim. Go ahead and haul that cow to the sale barn for .38/pound, instead of spending $25.

    hooves need trimming...is that normal

Topic drifted a little, but it may or may not be a problem depending on how and where they were raised.
