Pros and cons to raising jerseys for freezer beef....

I don't know much about feeding Jerseys or Holsteins for that matter, but there are those that can feed Holsteins to 1100 - 1200 # in 13 months or so, by feeding shelled corn with a specifically designed protein pellet with very minimal amount of hay or forage. The secret is to get them fat...

    Cows not bred!

Not knowing anything about your operation I believe a ear notch test would be in order to check and see if you have a BVD PI cow or bull in the group. At 3.50 per test it would be a cheap way to eliminate a possibility.

expensive hobby, Ohio law states: Ohio Revised Code 971.08 Entry onto adjoining property to maintain fence. (A) If an owner chooses to build a partition fence and the owner of adjoining property does not share in the construction of the fence, the owner building the fence, or a contractor...

    Fence ?

After a quick review of Ohio Revised Code chapter 971 Fences it would appear most of Ohios fence laws were revised in 2008. there is a part 971.07 that says basically what I said if there was not a fence there previously one owner would put up the fence and could be reimbursed for the next...

    Fence ?

Larry, If I'm not mistaken Ohio law changed a couple of years ago. It was the way you stated but I think it was changed that if your neighbor didn't have livestock they didn't have to pay their share but if they got livestock later you could go back on them for their share.I'll do a search on...

    PI Testing

I have tested a few calves and open cows through sekgenetics.http://www.sekgenetics.com/pdf/BVD_sampling.pdf. I have been using a red top tube and sending in a small styrofoam cooler and ice pack, but taking the sample from the lower section of the ear instead of top as stated in...

    Slightly lame heifer

Did you get to look at that foot good when you were putting the Dr. Nalers hoof treatment on? If not you need to probably have some help to hold the foot up or get someone with a hoof trimming table so you can really inspect that foot. I have had a small stone or a honeylocust thorn make you...

    ear tags

I have used Z-tags with good results on older cattle but had the big hole problem when I used them in newborns. Seems like it just tears up too much tissue. I guess I'm not too particular using several different brands of tag. I haven't had much problem with Duflex, Y-tex , Z-tags and Agritags.

    Tractor Using Oil

Are you using the same brand oil that the old man had used previously? Quite a few years ago I had a Buick skylark with the 151 cast iron engine with 200,000 plus miles that used a little oil.As time went on I started weaning it off 10-30 gas oil and on rotella t 15-40 diesel oil because the...

    Setting CIDR's after calving

I usually insert Cidr's in the 45 day range . I always thought it was a great way to sync a group of cows and in my opinion nothing jump starts heats any better on beef cows suckling calves. About three years ago I had a group I was doing and a cow that had calved 30 days before was in it and I...

    170Lb calf

Santas and Durham Reds is right that a PHA calf is obvious, looks like something prehistoric, and I will add that a TH affected calf has no significant weight difference from a unaffected calf.

what type of calf puller ?

I sure don't claim to be a expert on calf pullers but our vet and my son in law both have a Willman calf puller that is really nice. Made locally here in Dayton Ohio. No slip, instant reverse, good piece of equipment. http://www.hawkermfg.com/calfpuller/index.htmlI believe his is the longest one...
