Can anyone eyeball this Heifer and let me know weight?

From where it came from -- I was told it's black angus, but I know occasional there was some other bred into the herd every so many years on purpose (hyprid vigor?) I'm not sure what its called. Anyways, it came from a ranch where they have (and sell) hundreds per year. The orphans just get...

Can anyone eyeball this Heifer and let me know weight?

Thanks. It's my first :). The county wrote me a nasty-gram once because my pasture was growing too high which started this all... I didn't want to mow it, so I found a a four legged solution...

Can anyone eyeball this Heifer and let me know weight?

Well, I had to send her to the butcher. I raised her as an Orphan since she was small (You know -- that odd pet calf that lets you use her as a leaning post without running)? Yeah, she's responsible for the hilarity here with her grain bucket: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bvgt99Jp2k ...

A different kind of lost calf

I have some friends that relatively let their cattle travel 20-30 miles in the high desert of Nevada. Come round up time its horses or ATVs. Usually the snow will flush them down to an accessible point. They seem to have no problem moving quite a distance.

Can anyone eyeball this Heifer and let me know weight?

Thank you very much for the input. Many of you mention it's not ready for the butcher. What makes you say that and what is the consequence -- just sub-optimal yield?

Can anyone eyeball this Heifer and let me know what you think she weighs? Ready for the butcher?

    Buying hay

Thanks, I will take a look. I've seen both grass and alfalfa around here, but the most is the latter. Currently, she is on both COBS (corn oats barley) mix and receives some calfmana supplement, based on what the previous person was giving her. I'm sure this helps her grow, but it's not the...

    Buying hay

I've never bought hay before, but I will need some to get through the winter once the pasture, although plenty tall, will freeze up. What do you recommend I look for to feed a single ~5 mo old calf? I see a wide variety of hay on the market, and don't quite understand exactly what I need...

Can a livestock/horse trailer be used for shelter?

Can a livestock/horse trailer be used for winter shelter for a ~5 month old black angus if I leave it in the pasture with the doors open? Or will the animal want to have nothing to do with that? Winters are relatively mild (average 32 degrees), but there may be some cold days. I'm told the...

My first cow -- questions on selection (m or f) and care?

I watched for 2 hours, I got tired of waiting for her to drop one. She did Urinate. The ones I found in the field seem normal, but I don't know how old they are. I will let you know once I see more. I had to lead her to the water again... She didn't find the sweet grain all day (by the...

My first cow -- questions on selection (m or f) and care?

I believe you. It's just going on 36 hours now and she really hasn't touched the water. Now I'm just starting to get concerned. Everything else seems normal. She's walking, grazing, not mooing, etc...

My first cow -- questions on selection (m or f) and care?

Thank you for all your assistance and advice. I don't know if I got everything perfect, but I think we're close enough to begin the journey. Yesterday, I brought home the Heifer. She weighed a total of 240# and is about 5 months old at pickup. I took her for her brand inspection to get...

My first cow -- questions on selection (m or f) and care?

They do seem more friendly than most, perhaps because they were bottle fed. In most cases, their mothers either died from unrelated causes, they got separated in the herd and mothers could not fine or wouldn't re-claim them, or they just chose not to take care of them, but reasons varied. In...

My first cow -- questions on selection (m or f) and care?

I understand your logic and agree with what you are saying. If anything, I learned that I should really enter the cattle truck driving business any play arbitrage. However, my auction rates support $1.70/pound @ 300 pounds, and with 200 20% higher, so it seems within reason. I wish I could...

My first cow -- questions on selection (m or f) and care?

I'm quite certain it's orphaned or otherwise does not fit within their herd management for one reason or another (lost mother, born wrong time of year, who knows, I'm guessing)... I believe they have hundreds of head. I do know them, or at least one of their family members fairly well, so I...

My first cow -- questions on selection (m or f) and care?

In this case, I was "moderated", meaning my posts would appear hours later after they were approved. So unless I waited around and refreshed, I couldn't see when it posted to edit it, even if I saw it immediately :). But... it really doesn't matter... Back to animal talk... Question: If 320...

My first cow -- questions on selection (m or f) and care?

Here is a link with a video of the pasture (best viewed in 720/1080P if your computer will handle it). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_40XEmnhQQ It's taken with my cell phone, so please excuse the instability. Perhaps this will help with a better view of the area.

My first cow -- questions on selection (m or f) and care?

I tried to answer your comments, so you can provide additional information: Space -> I understand the space limitations. I've been told by others it is sufficient. The neighbor 3 houses down has a large cow in similar space without issues. The pasture doesn't support it except for the...

Yeah, I saw I screwed that one up after submit... But this thing is moderated and you can't go back and fix... heifer or steer

Can you also offer any input on the calf/steer selection? I'm told there's ~3-4 I can choose from. I can do either a calf or steer at this point, same price.
