Contracted Tendons Update & More Questions

Well the vet just came out. Turns out the calf has pneumonia, and a small abscess on his navel. He gave him a shot of something (forgot what it was called) right into the navel and an antibiotic in his neck. He also looked at the inflammation between the calf's "toes" on both front feet and he...

Contracted Tendons Update & More Questions

That's really encouraging to hear! Exercise...yeah he hasn't been getting much of that. He's in a 1 1/2 acre pasture with a heifer, but he mostly lays around. It seems to be painful for him to walk, which is why we are having the vet out to take a look at the swelling and figure out exactly what...

Contracted Tendons Update & More Questions

I just wanted to give an update on the calf from this thread. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=71580&e=0 I also have a couple questions. He is 6 weeks old today and he is still not walking normally. This is a picture from today of how he walks at his very best. As you can see, he still has a ways to go. At...

    Contracted Tendons/Knuckling Over

Here's an update on the calf. Today is day #13. First of all, his constipation is clearing up really well and he's almost completely back to normal. Also, we have seen a lot more improvement on his hooves this week than we did the first week. He actually walks on his toes a little bit now, and...

    Constipated Calf?

Yeah, we were going to start him on calf starter feed a few days ago, but things got busy and we haven't made it to the feed store to get some yet. We're going to get it today. Hopefully that'll help him out. hillsdown- Yep, this is the one with contracted tendons. We were thinking lack of...

    Constipated Calf?

Thanks for the advice! We decided to wait another day before doing the mineral oil since he seemed so happy and healthy, today he finally went a ton. It looked really hard at first, but by the time he was done it looked almost normal. So I guess we'll just continue to keep an eye on him and make...

    Constipated Calf?

I figured I better post a new topic for this question since it doesn't have anything to do with my first question about our calf. (here's the original one for this calf viewtopic.php?f=7&t=71580&e=0) We have an 8 day old bull calf. We had not seen him poop at all for a day-and-a-half, then he...

    Contracted Tendons/Knuckling Over

I have one other question about the calf. We had not seen him poop at all for a day-and-a-half, then he did one very small pile that looked like dog poop in consistency. That was two days ago, and I have not seen him go since. He's in a pretty small pen, so I'm pretty sure I'd see it if he went...

    Contracted Tendons/Knuckling Over

Katpau, that is great to hear! Thanks for sharing your experience with this. It's always encouraging to hear success stories of calves similar to ours. :)

    Contracted Tendons/Knuckling Over

Thanks for all the advice! I guess we'll just keep working on stretching them out and helping him stand correctly, and wait & see what happens. I feel much better about it now. I have very little experience with cattle and just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing.

    Contracted Tendons/Knuckling Over

Our neighbors gave us a bull calf last week with contracted tendons. (they didn't want to deal with it and said we could have him for free if we wanted him) It is in the joint just above his hoof on both front legs. He could barely stand the first day (we got him when he was three hours old)...
