What is the best breed to cross a Hereford/Angus cow too?

Genex doesn't carry Galloway anymore, but cattle visions does.

    Why do salt/mineral blocks exist?

I will start of by saying all parts of the country have different mineral requirements for cattle. I am in southeast North Dakota. All we feed the cow herd are the trace mineralized blocks, year around. We have done this for many years. I was told by a feed rep to just use the white ones and...

Solid 3" hair on the calves. Some were straight haired, others were curly haired. All were Pericles sired. Glad he worked for them. The others must have been wanting 4 inches or more. ;-)

A lot is a relative term...compared to what??? I am stating information I received as feedback from people that used him. They liked the calves, just were expecting an increase in hair. In our 5 calf crops from him on Galloway and Angus cows, Pericles sired cattle with less hair than other...

The ones I have seen over the past 33 years have. The higher energy the ration, the less hair the Galloway cattle had.

Our Pericles sired calves tend to have hair like their dams. In fact the people that used him on club calf bed animals were disappointed they didn't get more hair. The Willow Valley Galloway herd in Oklahoma, have finer hair.

Back when Angus cattle had hair, the crosses would more resemble the Galloway. With the Americanized Angus cattle of today, the hair really gets slicked off. The older Herefords had more hair as well. The Galloway bloodlines have gone more towards cattle that shed quicker as well. The...

The issues that Nite Hawk is having are the same reasons other producers choose to use Galloway in their programs. I hear it many times. " I have tried breed XYZ and they just aren't working ", or " I wish I would have used Galloway years ago." The hybrid vigor achieved really surprises...

True, and I respect that mindset. That having been said, I grew up raising registered Herefords. Got tired of dealing pink eye, foot rot, and udder issues. My wife grew up raising registered Angus. "Our Galloway cattle graze circles around the Angus, no need to pamper and supplement, much...

The silver dun bull pictured was a little post legged. He was an early 1990s model bull. Galloway tend to yield in the low to mid 60 % range. Some bloodlines have ultrasounded 65-67% Lean meat yield.

Thanks for the comments about our program. If you like our F1s, the 3/4 blood Galloway will blow you away. As for the pin set, some are quite sloped. I have always correlated it with calving ease. A Galloway cow can have larger calves. They typically have larger pelvic areas compared to...

What kind of herd do you run, and why?

Our herd is mainly full blood black Galloway (NON BELTED). Our main market is seedstock, semen, and embryos worldwide. We raise Galloway because they work for us, rather than the other way around. We graze longer into our brutal winters than our neighbors other breeds, by about 3 months. We...

The only problem with using a Hereford bull.

All (American Galloway Breeders Association) bulls have to have DNA on file to register progeny. The AGBA only registers Fullblood Galloway cattle. All solid colored Galloway cattle are fullbloods. Belted and White Galloways were created using Galloway cattle and other breeds.
