    Best Breed for new rancher

We love the Murray Grey cows, they would be great for someone to get their feet wet in the cattle business with.

    Murray Grey AI Bulls

We have some really nice weanling Lindale Hobo calves right now. Very impressed with them. And most our registered Murray Grey cows are bred to Rockcliffe Patron. So we are excited to see what that brings. We have also really liked our Willalooka Power stuff. For what its worth. Pharaoh has...

    Terramycin

We get all our terramycin at Cal Ranch stores, I don't know if you have those where you live but if you do they have everything like that usually.

Best equipment for working hay ground?

What do you all use out there for working alfalfa hay ground in the spring? Rotary harrows, tandem discs, tine harrows, triple K's? Anything else? I am just wondering what people like the best for smoothing up hay ground that is getting older in age and has gopher mounds, etc. We also have some...

    Fenceline weaning Updated 5-27

We use fenceline weaning too, and sometimes it goes great with very little bellering and sometimes the same group of cows raises quite a fuss. Maybe there is something to what these "old farts" are saying. :D

    Anyone Cutting Hay Yet?

Just be glad you aren't us, we still have some snow drifts in the hay fields, we are nowhere near cutting. Around here we don't ever cut until the end of June anyway, but this year will be even later. Thats what we get for living in the mountains I guess. We are at about 6000 feet in elevation.

    Bird problems!

Man I sure wouldn't put up with that jasranch. Was it the ravens that did it or something else? We have a lot of those ravens around here too. And some magpies. But so far they haven't ever messed with any of the calves. Protected or not, the day they peck the eyes out of one of my calves is the...

    Scouring calves-help!

Jasranch, when you find out what the results are let me know. I would be really interested in hearing what strain you have, we were going to take some samples here but the vet said we couldn't use any we had given antibiotics to, which was every calf that was sick at the time. We have been...

wich breed polled herford, beefmaster, or murray gray

I think you would really like crossing those cows on some Murray Greys, although I haven't ever seen that cross yet. We have crossed Murrays on a lot of different breeds, and really been pleased with the outcome. I would be interested in seeing that cross if you end up doing it. And you can't...

    Chevy & GMC Duramax's

Thats a loaded question, and you will get lots of different answers, depending on the brand of truck each person prefers. We were looking at pickups last year for our ranch, needed two of them and I really didn't care which brand, so long as it was a good truck. I actually like all three...

    Whats your Breed and Why???

Murray Greys!!! And the reason that I like them so much is because we also have Simmentals, Angus, Hereford, Charolais, and Limos. :D

    hole in utter

Amen about the big uddered cows, cull them while you can becuase they always give you trouble down the road. Last year we had a cow do basically the same thing as what you are saying happened to yours, we gave her some penicillin and watched that quarter closely, what eventually happened was...

    Probios

We do it a lot like milkmaid, we start giving them Probios while we are still treating them with antibiotics, in the hopes that maybe it helps a little. Then we continue to give it a few doses after we finish the antibiotics. We use something else besides just Probios, its called E.V.M. paste...

    cattlemen are pumping illegal ...........

This subject was brought about by a post I made concerning treatment of scouring newborn calves. I was not aware of what gentamicin was until someone mentioned it works well for that. Since then, our vetrinarian has in fact prescribed it to us for the treatment of newborn calves, and he did...

    To cull or not

We keep all our old cows until they actually come up open. And we can usually tell the year that they will too. Then you can get every last calf out of your cows, maximizing her. We also pull our bulls after 2 months, so if they don't breed back with everything else, they're gone.

    Scouring calves-help!

Larry, we have tried about everything so far as treatment is concerned: Terramycin tablets, Nuflor, Micotil 300, and penicillin. One doesn't seem to work any better than another, and if the calf isn't too dehydrated the terramycin tablets seem to do just fine. We are also drenching the calves...

    Scouring calves-help!

Okay, we have been running about 50 pair here for the last 5 years. We have used Scourguard in the past and never had any problems. (Meaning, we have never had to doctor a calf for scours, and never lost one or even seen one scouring). This year, we bought 30 more cows from several outside...

    cow nursing others calf

Sometimes its nice to have a few easy going cows around that let anyone nurse, but last year we had a registered Murray Grey heifer calve out a nice little bull, and of all the cows out there that I didn't want to let other calves nurse on her, wouldn't you know that she would be the one to do...

    Bulls and Fences...

I went to the sale, but didn't end up bidding on anything, I was hoping to grab either 1201 or 1202 if they happened to go for a steal, but they brought pretty good money (and they were well worth it) so I didn't bid on either one. My wife fell in love with both of them before they sold, and she...
