Good calf. Obviously your angus is carrying a red gene. Is the Angus purebred?
He is a registered Angus bull, I’m not aware of him being a red carrier. It’s an interesting situation in that we’ve had half of our cows are red and the other half are black or BWF and are red carriers, yet for two years the only reddish calf he sired is by this same cow. Last year she had a solid calf that same color. It was a very strange situation as he did darken in some areas like the points but in others he retained that color on the main body.
Here is a picture of her last years calf at weaning, he’s a full brother to the new calf.
The red brockle face cow’s mother was a solid black SimAngus out of another registered Angus bull, I had had her mother also a black cow since she was a heifer and had never had a red calf out of her, so when her black, Angus sired daughter had that red brockle face calf from a Braford bull I was surprised to a see a red wf calf ( the above pictured cow) instead of a BWF.
Her mother a black cow would go on to have chocolate colored calves when bred to Hereford bulls.
So this cow having the reddish calves must be a continuation of whatever trait it is. I wonder if it’s some kind of diluter gene or red Charlie gene from the Simmental back in her cow line.

Thats one of my pet peeves, that every breed im aware of test the bulls for homozygous black except for Angus. I bought a red cow in December that was bred to Angus and the calf is bright red. In my area thats a big discount in price at selling time. 600lb calf at .30 discount is $180.

If the bull has a red gene, wouldn’t he sire red calves from Hereford cows or other red cows?
 
Its not a perfect science but black is dominate over red and unless the bull has a red gene he can't get a red calf. Not even 1.
The farm where I got the red cow in December has other red and BWF cows and this year all are black but this one. Last year 3 were red from the same bull. No other cattle for a long distance so no mistaken the bull they are from.

He looks black to me. I bet he’ll darken up as he gets older. Does the cow have a little bit of brindle? If that’s the case, that means she carries the wild color gene and likely passed it on to her calves. Black hided cattle with the wild gene can have those brownish areas and still be true black.

I had never noticed any brindle about her, but from looking at the picture it does appear that she has a line of black just above her nose. I had never picked up on that in person before. She is out of a bull that was probably 3/4 Hereford and 1/4 Brahman.
 
After thinking through the heterozygous black percentages more clearly than late last night.
I know it’s on percentages and with limited numbers those exact percentages could very well not manifest.
My understanding is that a heterozygous black bull with red cows would result in 50% red calves and 50% black calves.
A heterozygous black bull with heterozygous black cows would result in 25% red calves, 50% heterozygous black calves, and 25% homozygous black calves.
We’ve probably had 30 some calves by the bull in question. By now a few cows have had 2 calves by him.
I would think that by all of our cows being either red which half of our cows are red, or the other half proven heterozygous black, with the exception of one cow that may be homozygous black, that we would be having other red calves.
When we used a known heterozygous black bull we always got several red calves. The cow above also had a distinctive lighter red calf by the known heterozygous black bull 3 years ago with her first calf.
I’m not saying it’s not possible for our Angus bull to be a red carrier, it just seems like there would be more red calves coming than just from that one cow.
I just somehow believe the difference is coming through that particular cow from her Simmental background.
Our bull is a registered Angus bull sired by a bull bred by Morehead State University, and his dam came from Stone Gate Angus, which is a long time established herd in the region.
 
Odds do not work out in an even scale. You can flip a coin ten times and all be heads. Flip it enough times and it will be half and half. It makes it hard to figure in the short term or with small numbers.
 
I will add to this with the deluter gene.
I have a few Charolais/ Angus cross cows and some others that look Charolais but no clue what they are mixed with. I had 3 black calves, 1 white with black nose, and a pair of twins with 1 of them being dark black and the other white with a black nose. I have several red cows with all black calves. These are from bulls that are Homozygous black by registration and by blood tests.
