2027 KR Ford Trucks

That was my rationale for going gas. A $9k upcharge for the powerstroke. I can buy a lot of gas for $9k and still haul 10 cows on a 20’ trailer easily. But then you pay for it when you trade. Best thing to do if you really want to get your money’s worth is bite the bullet, buy diesel and then run the wheels off of it, imho.
Maybe just my dumb luck, but I have spent more on repairs on our 6.2 than our 6.7.
 
I had a commercial building for awhile, and I rented it to a guy that bought and sold vehicles for a living. And he acquired whatever he sold, cars, trucks, ATV and side by side, and lots of motorcycles from San Diego, Louisiana, Texas, and Denver, all at least 500 miles from his rental building.
He had the longest bumper hitch, triple axle, enclosed trailer I've ever seen.
He pulled it with a Doge diesel for awhile, and then he bought a "totaled" Ford Super Duty diesel. And he had some kind of special setup on the Dodge, and then he transferred it to the Ford because he got phenomenal milage. He had a propane tank... and something that provided water injection. He claimed to get over 30 mpg... towing a loaded trailer.
Now I never took any trips with him, but I never got the feeling he was lying. Take it for what it's worth.
I posted this ^^^ thinking someone might have some experience with it. No one?
 
Our ranch truck is a flatbed single cab F250 6.2. We get 8mpg. I swear sometimes I can see the fuel gauge move while just sitting idle. Good thing it has a large fuel tank. Great for ranch duties but super weak for towing anything but the lightest load. Okay for moving cattle from pasture to pasture. In a pinch, we have hauled a load of up to 10 bales of hay of or a small load of cattle +/- 40 miles but it really struggles. For longer distances we use the diesel F350.
Wow. Before reading your post I would have said Lucky had something wrong with his 6.2 but sounds like yours is just like his. Here’s my current mileage, truck, steel trailer and the 10 cows I hauled across north Texas 3 weeks ago. Ran 60-65 mph the whole way and got 8-8.5 mpg. I can’t really complain about this one so far. Bought new in 2018. Paid cash.

I don’t have any recent experience. I think it must’ve been more popular with the no tech/low tech diesels 30+ years ago.

My dad had a mid ‘80s GMC one ton with a heavy utility bed. It had that gutless GM diesel that wouldn’t pull a greasy string out of a cats arse. He put a propane injection system on it and got it perform better but I don’t remember anything about fuel mileage.

These modern diesel injectors are pulsing up to five times per combustion event, before during and after, and at a much higher pressure and atomization.

That country appears incredibly flat from the pictures. Maybe they have a few hills to navigate?

Propane is injected as a combustion catalyst to allow you to burn more diesel fuel cleaner (think of it much like nitrous oxide in a gas engine). Water/meth injection is atomized into the air intake to lower intake air temps.

Both used in older diesels when trying to make big power, not something one would associate with super fuel economy

I'm always skeptical when people talk about their high MPG claims..

Yeah, I'm skeptical too. But do you have any direct experience?

I don't know the exact year of the Ford he put this equipment on, but I know it was between 2011 and 2016. The truck weighed over 9K, and I'm pretty sure before that they were lighter.
 
I had an early powerstroke with propane injection and a meth kit. All used to run more fuel and a bigger turbo ie drastically less MPG. But it sure was fast.

I remember back in the day that a lot of people would rebuild a gas engine with an RV cam to get more low end power and better milage, so was thinking it might be something like that. This time with different gases in the combustion chamber, and of course water injection might trim the fuel usage down to some degree. Maybe he was stretching it (the truth) a little?

I'm sure with the right tuning and setup some MPG increase is possible, but to nearly double fuel economy expecially while towing anything seems like a big stretch.

And IF your diesel consumption went down your then burning propane as well as the diesel...

I thought you generally lose power with propane over diesel. The benefits were clean burning and cheaper so you could throw more fuel at it.

Same with our NG motors.

Introducing propane into the intake of a diesel engine acts as an accelerant, promoting the even burning of the diesel fuel, results in a cleaner more even burn of the diesel fuel, which in itself will net you more power without anything else. But then guys like myself add more fuel which then needs more air (ie bigger injectors, fuel pump, turbo, etc) and you end up with gobs of power, poor economy, poor reliability, but a whole lot of smiles.

Got ya. It may be when you switch to 100% propane vs diesel.

Yeah if you run completely on propane that's a different animal. LPG has quite a bit less BTU per gallon than gasoline or diesel. So you lose power but it's a clean fuel.

I've got a LPG generator with outrageous hours on it and the inside of that engine looks like new, not a spec of carbon anyplace.
 
Only propane/water set ups I see are on pulling tractors. Got a good friend that has one all set up with it. I dont think it does much for fuel economy or durability but he is making 1200+ hp on what was a 100hp tractor from the factory.
